I have an iPad 2 running iOS 8. The email app is not working. The screen shows empty email box, then closes on its own. I have tried closing the app, turning ipad on and off and reset to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Try doing the reset or force quitting the mail app

Reset

Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. No data will be lost.

Force close an app

Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.

I know what I did to cause the issue. I received an email that was sent to a very large number of people. I tried to "Reply all" and the mail screen froze on the white background. I tried everything suggested in this thread and nothing fixed the issue. Unfortunately I couldn't try the upgrade because I am already upgraded to the latest version of iOS. What fixed it for me was a hard reset. I erased all settings and files and restored from the iCloud backup. Make sure you do the hard reset as soon as the issue happens because if you have iCloud backup activated, the phone will back itself up with the bad backup. If that happens you have to hard reset and start as a new phone.

I had the same problem and i am by no means a techie so I rely on this forum. I didn't want to delete my email or remove from the device just yet so i tried going into settings and just turning off the email account from mail settings. then i went back into the mail app and miraculously it worked. I'm not sure that will work for everyone but it was a harmless way to try and it worked.

Very frustrating problem. I tried most suggestions posted to no avail including reboot, deleting and adding email profiles. What worked for me is going to settings, general, storage, manage storage, then select mail. There is a possibility to open email and or create email. Something happened and everything is working fine now. Not sure this solution works for everyone, but it is worth a try. I am on OS 9.0.2.

I Had the same issue, and after updating iOS to no effect ans countless reboots, I tuned off my email accounts, by going into each one and sliding the button of the left from green to grey. This still did not remedy this issue. I then went to Fetch new Data, which was marked as Push , I then turned that button to off and opened the mail app again. The app now worked. I found an email that seemed to have hung my mail box which I deleted. I turned the email accounts back on and the Fetch new data to push, my mail app worked fine. User uploaded file
