Does turning off iMessage hide sent iMessages?

I've been told by a friend that it happens to them (They have iPhone 5S) - when it is turned off the messages disappear and they reappear when it is turned on again. Just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me if it's true?

Also, what is the QUICKEST way to retrieve deleted messages?

Thank you!

No, switching off iMessage does not make conversations disappear when sent as iMessages, just tried that. They stay unless you delete them.

Deleted messages can only be recovered by restoring from a backup that has been taken before you deleted them. But all other settings will be set back to that point in time as well.
