Recieving messages from non Apple phones in Messages on computer

A friend has changed to a non Apple phone. I would like to know how or if it is possible to setup my computer to receive his messages from his phone?

Thanks,

John

Hi,

There are two possibles.

1) In Yosemite and iOS 8 on your iPhone not only can you link them to "Sync" iMessages but you can do the Same for SMS by Setting Text Forwarding on the iPhone.

This only works when the iPhone and Mac are on the same network.

2) If you have an AIM Screen Name (and @mac.com, @me.com registered with iCloud and @icloud.com ID work as AIM Screen Names) and the person has a phone on certain US carriers then you can use AIM with Messages. You add the Phone number as if it were a Buddy but adding a leading +1 in front. (As in +1234567890)

This is part of the list https://help.aol.com/articles/aim-mobile-im-forwarding (Expand the "Does my wireless carrier support IM Forwarding?" option)

Hi,

Eric has it.

However in pedantic detail.

On the iPhone > Settings > Messages

The iPhone Number needs to be used for iMessages (turn the App On)

Then the Mac needs the same (using the Apple ID) in the iMessages account.

Then you link the two by adding the Apple ID to the iPhone And accepting the resultant Pop up on the Mac about what the iPhone is Using (Adds the iPhone number to the Mac version settings).

At this point you set the Text Forwarding n the iPhone in the Settings > Messages.

This causes the pop up to appear on the Mac.

The Code in the pop up has to be entered on the iPhone in the dialogue box that should still be open.

I have an MBP at home and an iMac at the office, both running identical versions of Yosemite; preferences are set identically. At home, I get all non-iphone messages, both send and receive; at the office, only iPhone messages. Can't figure out why I can't get the same functionality at work as at home. There must be some pref that controls this, but I can't find it. I recall some time ago getting a message asking me to allow Messages to read and write non-iphone messages, but I only got that message at home. Any advice welcome.
