The AOL login button was removed a number of years ago, you just use the normal login field to login to the username account, after which you should be prompted to convert it to an email address : Convert your AOL Username to an Apple ID - Apple Support.
Thank you for the quick reply! However - as it does not work with my current password - is it possible that Apple does not check the up-to-date AOL login information (= password), but older ones? I must admit that I have not logged in with my AOL screen name for many years, but was now alarmed by the notification e-mails from Apple.
The password should be what you were using with the AOL username account. Had you bought anything with that account or had a balance on it ? If not then you don't have to worry about converting it, the account will just disappear after March 30th. If you have got anything on the account and the password as you remember it isn't working, then try getting it reset : http://iforgot.apple.com (I assume that AOL username account passwords are reset in the same as other accounts)
Also remember, you may have to iTunes Store accounts:
one that ends in @aol.com
one that is just an old school AOL screen name
If your password isn't working for an Apple ID that ends in @aol.com, you can just go to appleid.apple.com and reset the password.
If your password isn't working for an iTunes Store account that's just an AOL screen name, you'll want to double check that you're entering in the correct password. You could probably verify that you're entering in the right password by going to aol.com or aim.com and attempting to sign into AOL's portal, since it'd be the same password used there. This password isn't something Apple would manage.
