Why would you ring Apple about a phone number allocation? They are not a carrier. Whoever told you to ring them is wrong.

You can use iMessages with a hotmail account with no problem, I do.
TThen what do others use to text u,do u have a iMessage number...the thing is if I text someone from my iPad they can text me right back but it comes up with my hotmail address and that's no good....

iMessages only work with a email address. You can't send SMS text messages to an iPad, even if you have a cellular iPad it's not a cell phone
I Can send iMessages to myself with my hotmail account but others cannot.....
Are they using a Apple device ?
well how come others cannot iMessage me with my email to my iPad....why did ATT give me a cellular number then.
yes they r using their iPhones....... My son tried last night with his iPhone 6 and it did not work.
I Have no idea why ATT gave you a cellular number, that's what I'm trying to understand.
On your son's iPhone does he have your email address in contacts ?
