Transferring library to new computer

We bought a new computer, I followed the instructions to copy Itunes library to my external hard drive but when I try to copy my itunes library from my external hard drive, I don't have a file called itunes library so when I click choose library I get a file cannot be found message

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

When you copied data to your external drive did you copy the database (iTunes Library.itl) from your old computer? If you were previously using the external drive for media storage only, it is possible that you were running a "split" library with the iTunes database on your C: drive and the media files and folders on the external drive. See turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for more details and the steps needed to bring your library into a layout that makes it much easier to move between computers.

Thank you for the reply, however, I did not use the external hard drive until I wanted to copy itunes onto it. I have now done a Windows file transfer onto the new computer but still only the purchased songs are showing and not the several hundered cds we have in the library.

I read turingtest2's tip on split library but as far as I can work out it doesn't apply to me.

If the files are stored elsewhere, how do I find out where?

When I go into properties, to see where the drive is for the library it only shows one location whihch is what I have copied.

Thanks (in advance)
