iphone won't connect to mac airbook

My iPhone 6 won't connect to my new Mac Airbook. Ive tried both USB ports, 2 different cords. When I plug my phone in nothing happens - doesn't ask me to trust/not trust. After 30 seconds or so, an iTunes alert pops up that the device has timed out. Any suggestions?

Hi, amurph82.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are receiving device timed out alerts in iTunes. These are usually related to some type of USB conflict. Here is a troubleshooting article that I would go through for this specific issue.
