Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Is Manual Wifi the best Mac Mini can do?

My Wifi keeps dropping.

It works when I'm using the internet on the Mac, but if I'm not working on the Mac then after a few minutes it drops connection.

My Windows PC if fine - never drops connection,

my iPad is fine, my iPhone is fine - and all 4 devices are within 2 feet of each other.

I've moved the Mac Mini around. Put a box under it, etc. It keeps dropping.

I've read articles about the dropping of Wifi by Mac Minis and have tried some of the workarounds - but to no avail.

I guess this is part of the Mac Mini design (so I guess I won't be purchasing another).

Workaround:

I have found that by clicking on the Wi-Fi icon, then turning off Wi-Fi then clicking on the Wi-Fi icon and turning on Wi-fi it is a workaround for Apples poor design.

I have given my other family members this training and it works for them (I have even put a note on the machine because they are used to the automatic feature on their own devices and often forget).

So if you are having a Wi-Fi problem on your Mac Mini - just go manual...

Is it actually dropping the connection e.g. No wifi is associated in the menu?

It is also possible a different part of the system is failing (like DNS), causing the internet to appear offline when in reality local networking may still work. Do you have other devices on the network? Can they still connect locally when the internet is dead?

What OS X version are you using?

If manual works for you stick with it (I don't have an answer), but more info may help get you closer to a solution.

Hello and thank you for your prompt reply.

When I am not using the machine constantly (i.e. I might be doing something else for 5 or 10 minutes) the Wi-Fi icon goes grey. If I click on my email etc, it comes back with the screen that says I have no connection (I'm using Safari). Then I just follow my manual routine to get back on.

I am running OS X 10.9.5

My wireless connection on the 3 other devices right next to the Mac Mini do not drop. I use the Windows PC about 8 hours a day and the only time I've had connection problems is when I lost my router connection (which happens a few times a year). I go to lunch, come back, and my Windows machine is still connected perfectly (of course my Mac Mini has dropped connection).

If you have access to an Ethernet connection to the internet router, that may be

a way to go; then it should be very stable and all up/down networking would be

much faster than the wi-fi speeds, that generally are rather slower than Ethernet.

•Solutions for connecting to the Internet, setting up a small network, and troubleshooting - Apple Support

In fact, you may be able to backward-troubleshoot if you use the Ethernet and

then see if that Mini could share the internet over its wi-fi to other machines.

This would depend on how your Mini settings are placed, so as to troubleshoot

and have the Mini a source for wi-fi when the other network is offline.

Did you try setting up the Mini with a second user account, (admin) to be able

to attempt to troubleshoot the problem with automatic recognition of your wi-fi

base station? Logged into a second different account could be helpful under

certain circumstances; also check the location and other settings in network.

If the Mini is under AppleCare, and you can get the wi-fi to fail, you could see if

the authorized service provider could diagnose & attempt a repair on the unit.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

It can't be DNS if the network drops altogether, ignore my earlier comment on that.

Apple have this tool which is designed to help you to setup a router for best performance…

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202663

It doesn't explain why you only see issues on the Mini (& others also see the same in other locations). Another thing to test may sound weird, but my personal experience leads me to suggest it anyway 🙂. See if the Mini can hold a connection for longer periods if you move all other devices away from it (or disable their radios). I have found that having several wifi devices in close proximity competing for connections to the same base station can lead to one of them falling over.

K Shaffer is right about using ethernet & Applecare, if you have warranty contact an Apple store.

Mar 6, 2015 5:53 PM in response to K Shaffer

I guess instead of the Ethernet solution which would be a physical hardwire snaked to my router which is in a different part of my house,

I would rather just have something like a physical switch (like a light switch) that I could plug into my Mac Mini...

then I could just flick the switch turning the Wifi Off-then-On which is easier then the mouse clicks...

still manual but easy.

I went to the following Mac Help Site and tried their first 2 recommendations:

I have shut the Windows PC, and iPad, and iPhone off (I thought they were competing for resources)... but to no avail.

As I said, the Mac Mini works as long as I'm using it... I'm not a Mac expert ... I like my iPhone and my iPad ... but the investment to switch to Apple as a real computing solution is not yet working for me - my Windows PC is still more dependable (and cheaper).

It is kind of weird - since I have posted I have been online with no WiFi drops, but if I go and make a cup of coffee and come back it will drop - could the screensaver function be causing the drop? Or something like it (i.e.....no activity....time to drop WiFi....) --- a feature?

Again, I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions.

This may give us a clue as to what may be happening.

Open Applications->Utilities->Console.

In the right panel under Files, expand /var/log. Scroll to the very

bottom and you should see wifi.log. Select it and copy and paste

several dozen lines starting at the latest entry.

This may indicate the up and down of the WiFi and the event

that caused it.

I have this problem, too. Just started to occur on my late-2012 Mac Mini. 😠

Hello woodmeister50,

I hope this helps (sorry for the long set of data, this was from last night when I had the issue).
