That is clearly a SCAM. You did the correct thing by not clicking on that invitation to disaster.

I would contact AOL technical support.

The message is not from AOL or Apple. It's a deceptive ad by a third party advertiser which is trying to trick you. A browser cannot detect viruses or malware on a Mac and in fact this is exactly how Mac users get tricked into downloading malware. Ignore the popup and close the window if you can - seems like that worked for you.
