I installed Google Chrome on my computer, but then deleted it when I found that Safari is better anyway. Now I can't get rid of the googlechrome.dmg (I don't even know what a dmg is). It is sitting in my trash, but I can't empty my trash because "googlechrome.dmg" is in use.

Try OPTION COMMAND ESC and force quit Goolgechrome if it is displayed. Or open Activity Monitor and set it to All Processes, look for it there, select it, and the click on Quit Process.

Nope. I have already deleted Google Chrome. It is just the dmg package that needs deleting.
You have to eject the disk image before you can delete the file. It should appear in the sidebar of a Finder window and/or on the Desktop.
I can't find it in my Finder sidebar. Am I looking in the right place?
You're not showing disks in the sidebar. Open the Finder preferences window and select the Sidebar tab. Check the box marked External disks.

Here's what worked for me. Open the trash can folder. Right click and then click "Delete Immediately."
