Lightning to VGA adapter (Apple brand) not working with iPad Air

This morning I tried to use my Lightning to VGA adapter (Apple brand) with my iPad Air and it simply didn't work, all I could get was the following on screen message:

Accessory

Downloading accessory firmware. Your accessory will not function until the download completes

This cable worked perfectly fine with my iPad Air on iOS 8.1.3, so I'm quite sure that there's nothing wrong with the cable or the iPad.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem or at least a workaround to it? I use my iPad Air for teaching and this morning wasn't able to project.

Please tell me Apple is aware of this and they'll be releasing iOS 8.2.1 with a fix to this problem. How is that iOS 8.2 went through quality assurance with a bug like this?

Feeling your pain. I am also a teacher and discovered the problem right before class started. I temporarily worked around it by accessing my lecture through iCloud, using a laptop. Another user in another thread apparently resolved the problem by completely resetting his iPad to factory settings, through iTunes. I haven't tried that yet, but plan to do so over the weekend.
