iphone 6 storage doesn't add up

My iPhone 6 64 GB phone keeps alerting me my storage is full. I have deleted almost all of my apps, and many pictures and videos and each time it just goes back to full. The amount of storage it says I am using does not add up to the amount it says is used. My other is only 2.2 GB and all together it adds up to about 22 GB of storage used, yet it says I have used 55 GB and my iPhone is full. Where is my missing 30 GB of storage and how do I get it back?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.2

I see this is an older post, but after reading through all of the replies I couldn't help but add my 2cents. There is a much easier way to free up a lot of this bloated space (for those who use Apple Music), short of going through the entire process of Restoring your phone from a backup. Which takes a lot of time. You want a solution that will work quickly so you can keep taking pictures of your kid at their latest performance.

I agree, important to delete old back-ups, deleted photos, unused apps, etc.. but the quickest thing to do to free up space is to go to the phone's Settings > iTunes & App Store > tap on "Apple ID..." > sign out > then sign back in.

Granted, this is going to free up space for those who use streaming Apple Music. Probably frees up space from other cached data, but largely it will remove the cached data from streaming music (which streams but also stores on your phone). To regain access your music library, playlists, etc. you will need to go to Settings > Music > enable "iCloud Music Library" as this gets turned off when you log out of your account. Note, you'll also have to download any music you'd downloaded previously from Apple Music, as this gets wiped out when you log out. But in a pinch when trying to shoot a priceless video, it's worth it.

I have the same exact problem on my iPhone 6 with 64GB. She hardly have anything in it and maybe about 10GB use total, but now all of a sudden, the almost full message comes up...no solution using any cleanup Apps. The total usage just does not add up. Also recently upgraded to 8.4. Virus? iOS bug? This is extremely frustrating.

I am having a similar problem on my iPhone 6, running iOS 8.4. It came and went with repeated efforts to sync (which didn't work at first, similar to other posts) then once it synced it cleaned up. Unfortunately now, the problem persists with < 100 MB available.

I read a post suggesting it has to do with Chrome/Safari browser info or bookmarks, but I don't have Chrome on my iPhone.

Think there is a glitch somewhere causing this, and looking forward to a fix.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ THE LONG STORY, HERE IT IS IN A NUTSHELL: Get "iFunBox" (or some other file management app) and look for any hidden files on your iPhone. Then DELETE them!

I have been having a the same/similar problem since updating to ios8 (whenever it was when it first came out) to my 4s. I kept getting messages that the storage was full when i knew **** well that it wasn't! Also the phone would say one amount was free, iTunes would say another amount… nothing ever matched up. When looking under "manage storage" on the phone, just flipping back and forth from each app's info to "storage" would make the "available" amount go down (not a lot, but it kept filling up!). Music would show up in the "on my device/music" that i never loaded or downloaded from my library. When i deleted them they always came back but showed up as zero k. This always started when i turned the phone on to show all my music and turned on the iCloud library. The only thing that seemed to clear all this extra storage was to reset it and restore from back-up. Very time consuming and ineffective as within a few days it would start with the storage full messages again. The other day i read someone had used an app on the mac called "iFunBox" to find hidden files in their phone and delete them. i downloaded the app (free!) and found that i had hidden files too. A LOT OF HIDDEN FILES! In the phone under the "Raw File System" i found a folder named "Cloud Assets" that contained a little over 440mb of mp3 & m4a files, and accompanying plist files. I don't keep any music on the phone anymore, i stream everything from iCloud. It seems these were made from music i had recently listened to. The names were all altered. I copied them to my iMac so I could open & inspect what they were. Their names looked liked this:

CloudAssets/persistentid-4023831224729247364-HQ.mp3

CloudAssets/persistentid-4023831224729247726-LWHQ.plist

CloudAssets/persistentid-4023831224729249236-LWHQ.m4a

There was no way to play them from the phone, so i deleted them all and freed up a lot of space. BUT… as soon as i began streaming music again, a whole new batch showed up. Deleted them. Streamed. More files! This has been going on for the last 3 days. So big question is WHY DOES IT KEEP DOWNLOADING/GENERATING THESE FILES! (Apple??? What is going on here)

PS- i have just found a lot of weird cache files of iTunes artwork. Over a 1.5GB's worth of album and video artwork that i can find no logical reason for being on the phone (as their is no corresponding music or video on the phone either). Gonna delete them too!

- iPhone 4S iOS8.4.1 (but most of this took place with earlier versions) capacity: 5.34GB

OK - here's something that helped me a little:

1 - I turned off iTunes match (it's called iCloud Music Library now), then turned it back on again. This yielded over 3 GB!

2 - I turned off Photo Stream and back on again, this yielded about 1.5gb (after photo stream re-imported about 1.1GB of photos).

So, those two "cloud" services are not really working as I expected they would. (and I am still missing about 4GB of storage space, but I expect a restore from backup might help.)

Apples - "Get the data off your phone and into the cloud!"

Me - "Awesome!"

Apples - "Just kidding, loads of data will be kept on your phone in a hidden partition that you can't delete. You'll have to download it anew every time incurring data charges, but we won't be freeing up any actual local storage space. Hope you love it!"

Me - "oh.... um.... ok. Is this a glitch"

Apples - "Nope, no glitch here. Did you see the new Apple TV!?! It has games!"

I have had similar problems with my iPhone 6. I have practically no music, very few photos, not many apps (after deleting most) but all of my 11.6GB of available space was used. I ready many post about safari and mail history and caches and got a bit nervous. I do not delete history on my mac as I use it for reference and was worried about clearing safari history and so on. I did a search for cache cleaning apps and found one called PhoneClean by imobie. After installing and running a scan, I found loads of temporary safari items and partial downloads. It took me 10 minutes and I recovered 5.6GB of space on a 16GB iPhone 6 which is a pathetic capacity in the first place (a gift) Apple should drop the 16GB. The same worked for my wife but hers also had a huge photo cache which required the pro version which was still a bargain since this issue has affected how we work.

I had the same issue even with 128gb iPhone 6 Plus, just like everyone here storage capacity was 119GB and apparently i used up everything and elft with 0 bytes. What was worse was that I couldn't backup my iPhone because it just says it couldn't back up because iPhone was disconnected (when my cable was showing that iPhone is charging and I could access the files in my iPhone while it was backing up).

Two solutions:

1) Fix the backup issue first then Back Up Now

- Delete previous backup files as it could be corrupted. How to? Menu (top left corner) / Preferences / Devices / Delete Backup

- Now click 'Back Up Now'. Back Up could take up to an hour or so. Mine took almost 35 minutes. However at my first attempt it was successful.

2) To fix storage full issue.

- After you performed the Back Up, click Restore iPhone.

After resetting the iPhone, you can now observe on your iTunes that your storage has free up a lot more space by now at the indicator located at the bottom beside the Sync icon. in my case, I now have 98.20 GB free from 0 bytes free.

- Restore your iPhone using the back up file and if you have chosen Encrypt iPhone backup previously, a pop up will now prompt you to enter password and this would be the password you have entered for the Encrypt iPhone backup. Initially i thought it was iTunes password or my phone's unlock password. After a number of attempts i remember i had an Encrypt iPhone backup password. So don't panic.

Result:

Although i lost all my WhatsApp images that was saved within WhatsApp, however i managed to restore everything else including my WhatsApp chats. Free up 98GB worth of space from supposedly 0 bytes. Believe it or not, my phone now works a lot faster and hangs less now.

I hope this helps.

Hi there! I recently got my iPhone 6 and have not even had it for a year. I was having the same problem, I had only used 17 Gb but I had only 277 mb from my 64 gb! You can fix it though 🙂 most of the space is being taken up by extra junk in your apps. All you have to do is download an app that will clean it up.

I Used "Memory and Disk Scanner Pro", you can get it on the App Store for free! Just scan on both options and you should get back your unused memory 😀

The same problem occurs to me with iCloud storage. I have deleted all photos and videos from photostream (also cleared the deleted items) and iCloud still says (in the properties page) I am using 1.8GB. I have deleted all email (and emptied trash) and iCloud still says I am using 1.84GB for email. And Apple continues to send the emails that my storage is almost full and I should purchase more space. Apple should get their act together with iCloud before asking for extra money! 😠

I had this issue before (and have it again). But this is the way I discovered to fix it:

1. Back EVERYTHING up, either to the cloud or your computer via iTunes. It may take a while.

2. Restore your phone to factory settings. It is necessary to do this first, otherwise the junk data won't get erased.

3. Restore it again but this time from the back up file. This will only put your REAL files back on the phone, leaving all that junk data erased.

NOTE: Be careful that you back everything up that you want to keep, otherwise it'll be gone forever.
