macbook white 2,1 battery replacement

2.5 yr old Macbook Pro died today. logic board burnt, hard drive wiped cleaned. Dug the macbook white 2007 out of storage.

Battery type is ASMB013

packlot code 0001

firmware ver 0102

hardware rev 0300

over 1000 cycles and does not hold charge. Is the A1185 okay as replacement?

What about battery smc firmware update. 1.4? 1.5? This macbook is running 10.6.8

read here about those who buy new battery and when turned off battery drains. Maybe b/c wrong firmware?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

This is the correct battery from Apple http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA561LL/A/rechargeable-battery-13-inch-macbook -white?fnode=a545af0f6072f13f488cce34e05…

The ONLY third party battery I would consider is from OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple_laptop/batteries/MacBook_13_White

Avoid the cheap lnock offs sold on the auction sites. When it comes to macbook batteries I believe you get what you pay for.

"They are all made in China."

Yup, when the first iPods came out I wondered why you could buy identical iPods off of eBay from China for half of Apple Store prices. Apple apparently stopped that by using proprietary software that the Chinese couldn't copy because the Chinese copies started being sold as "non Apple software".

Then I saw a 60 Minutes and a Popular Science story about these factories in China. They were all being run 24/7 all 3 shifts. The first 2 shifts for the American market and the last shift for the gray market.

Everything was being made on the same machines, just w/ cheaper materials.

There was a Chinese knockoff of the Chevy Spark that every part was interchangeable w/ the American versio. They were made on the same line on the same machines just on the graveyard shift w/ cheaper materials.

"I see NO green lights on my battery. I am assuming it is on its last leg"

No lights - very bad sign!

"But it's 6 years old now."

Li Ion technology is a bit mysterious. These batteries, (unlike the Mercury type) will die just sitting on the shelf. 6 years is about the lifetime. Sort of like a gerbil!

"2.5 yr old Macbook Pro died today. logic board burnt,"

You didn't say what happened to your MBP.

Size, year built, OS? Circumstances of death? See that's even less than a gerbil. I've still got 2009s, '10s and 11s working. Even 2007 MacBooks still doing their thing!

"MRP is confirmed dead by Apple. Not sure how your knowing all the specs will make a diff."

Well like Miracle Max says "There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead."

Certain models of the MBP (Retina?) have a recall on them currently.

"Besides where do I now find that info?"

The serial number is embossed on the bottom case. Run it here:

"180 one stars out of 433 reviews. Geez."

Probably those were the years of the Sony battery failure and recall. During that period you would just contact Apple, supply your battery serial number? and credit card #. They would send you a new battery w/ a return label. When you returned the bad battery they would refund the charges on your card. I did about 3 of them for myself and clients during that recall.

Ok. False alarm. I have green lights again! Anyhow, I have been researching the batteries online. The OWC one got great reviews. But some on Ebay that are 'used' seem to have low cycles. Like 12. Mine says it has 1078. I am close to buying a new computer. I do wonder if the Ebay ones are truly what they say re cycles-can they fudge those numbers or will I see the same thing if I do pop it in my computer? (now that I know where to look!). Thanks, again.
