LVM appears Red in Disk Utilities - can I fix or delete?

Hello there... having a problem I am hoping someone might be able to help out....

I have an LVG that is offline but appearing Red in Disk Utilities. I am afraid to reboot as worried it will hang due to the volume being bad and maybe it will see it as a corrupt partition. (Yosemite 10.10.2)

It does offer me the option to fix in Disk Utilities but I am leery as it says "Your damaged internal disks will be erased." and not sure if this means if could affect /dev/disk0 partitions...meaning wipe my main drive.

It is a new Mac book and I was trying to encrypt my TM volume (created in diskUtilities), During the process I was forced to eject and run. I (stupidly in retrospect) tried to clean up this LVG in DiskUtilities but it would not let me delete (b/c Disk Utilities does not support LVM Mgt and possibly b/c the partition is encrypted)

After some reading, I followed the instructions hereas far as I could

sudo diskutil unmount force /dev/disk5

jkuhnes2015MBP:~ jkuhne$ sudo diskutil cs deleteLVG D7982B05-9B63-4C93-A5F3-8F4DE6FD56B4

Password:

The Core Storage Logical Volume Group UUID is D7982B05-9B63-4C93-A5F3-8F4DE6FD56B4

Started CoreStorage operation

Destroying Logical Volume Group

Error: -69783: Unable to delete the CoreStorage Logical Volume Group

I will wait until my TM backup completes and will build a recovery USB stick just in case.

I would like to know if it is possible to remove this LVG clean?

Is it possible/recommended to "fix" from DiskUtilities without affecting /dev/disk0 ?

Thanks in advance...

Thanks for the reply. Have found that when I disconnect the external drive, I still see the LVG (below). My guess is that somehow because of encryption it tried to pull this LVG under the LVM as my main HD is encrypted as well? Does that make any sense?

When I created the original partition it was on an empty 2 TB external drive and I selected encrypted partition. I am fairly certain it was on the external drive/volume b/c I was adding second partition and I remember seeing the first by name.

I have since completed a TM backup and creating a recovery disk in a moment (re-downloaded Yosemite)

I am thinking my option are:

1. Boot and see if i can still boot successfully - if so do nothing as this is my main work laptop and I want to keep it running

2. Boot from recovery partition / disk and use Disk Utility to remove the LVG while the main HD is not mounted

3. Boot from recovery partition / disk and use Disk Utility 'fix' option (scared it will wipe from my main volume but theoretically I could do a TM restore)

I also through about trying to decrypt my main HD to see if Disk Utility might be able to deal with it any better but I don't think I have the ability to as my company forced the encryption policy and at no time did I enter a pw (corp network based backup/restore program is the recommended approach)

There is no local support in my company so it's really up to me at this point....

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

but tired a few and found some undocumented cmds "removeDisk" - however it did not work

That's the one correct.

If it fails it may be the hard disk failing. As a last resort, you can try the solving post on this AskDifferent thread

Ooops. I didn't noticed. You must sudo the diskutil cs delete.

Mar 15, 2015 3:56 PM in response to Linc Davis

It was only one external drive. I added a second partition to it journaled / encrypted and then during a time machine backup where it was encrypting, I believe I clicked 'skip this backup' , turned off time machine and ejected the HD. After adding it back later, I decided I did not want an encrypted partition and attempted to delete it with disk utilities UI vs. cmd line. This is where I ran into trouble... I have since added a second partition to the same USB HD (non-encrypted) and performed a successful time machine backup. However this LVG remains without a partition under it....

Hi! Good news...

I rebooted with my Recovery USB ready, held Option/Alt, selected my main HD and now I'm back and the LVG no longer appears in disk utilities or diskutil cs list. The fact I had the volume offline I guess was enough (there was no partition -otherwise I would have excluded it in fstab). So I don't really have a solid explanation for the sequence of events but seems to have corrected itself. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and help!
