Boot Camp error. Hard drive issues.

I did that last night. Also added "diskutil cs <UUID>" ( not knowing that it was going to split the SSD from my HHD) But if bootcamp would finally work it would be worth it. Sadly same problem as before. This stuff is over my head. IMO, apple should fix their own mistakes. If I wanted to learn DOS I would of bought a PC. lol!

Any help would be appreciated. This computer never had bootcamp installed on it. I was using Parallels until they wanted me to buy an upgrade, So been attempting to install boot camp for about 6 months? A year? I forgot. Boot camp assistant, at the "allocation of space" page. where it shows the partition slider. It's stuck at 0gb. Trying to slide adjuster doesn't work. But if I click on it or use mouse scroll wheel it will show "20gb" partition for bootcamp, (no more no less) even though I have 330gb's free... When I proceed with the install, 22 seconds later I get "Your disk could not be partitioned" error message.

True, that's new, did that last night when following another persons post on how to fix drive. Which it split the SSD from HD, by means of 'diskutil delete cs<UUID>'. I tried this because everything else I tried didn't work. Even when the Fusion drive was in it's "stock state" nothing I tried worked. I haven't been able to figure out how to recombine them again. Not that BCA worked when it was.

I just found an old post of mine (4 months ago) Why won't BootCamp allow me to make a Partition? This was how my HD was up until tonight.

Yes I made a TimeMachine backup lastnight. Split the drive thinking that was the issue. Reformatted drives with disk utility. Clean install from internet. Rebooted, made temp user, downloaded OS update, Reinstalled backup (Took 5 hours). Then tried BCA. Same Ol' problem.

Mar 14, 2015 4:49 PM in response to NoiD™

You have two options.

1. Split the SSD and install Bootcamp on one half of SSD (much faster to boot Windows), or,

2. Use the following steps

a. Use Internet Recovery, rebuild the CS and either Restore, or use Migration Assistant.

b. Verify that the CS volume looks correct.

c. Run BCA and try to partition.

The diskutil cs command needed a addDisk <UUID> where UUID belongs to the HDD, not the SSD. If the SSD is now added, it will be index 1, which will have really bad performance, because a Fusion drive should have an SSD at index 0, and HDD(s) at index 1 and higher.

Right now, you have the 3TB HDD at index 0, which needs to be 1.

Should I try "diskutil cs create Fusion disk0 disk1"?

You should not use disk0. disk0s2 is the usable volume. The problem you will run into is that it will be at index 1 (index 0 is already occupied by the HDD).

No joy! Not able to rebuild the cs. I tried the diskutil cs addDisk <UUID-the HHD> No errors. but then did a diskutil cs list, nothings changed. Do I first need to do a diskutil cs delete <UUID> then and diskutil cs addDisk <UUID>?

You already have the HDD in the CS volume. It will have no effect. If you delete the only UUID which belongs to HDD, you will destroy the CS. The best option you have to rebuild the CS from scratch using Internet Recovery and restoring using TM. You mention it takes 5 hours, but I do not see any other way.

We can experiment, if you are willing. Can you right click on Macintosh HD in Finder and click on Get Info and post a screen shot? What is the amount of disk space used?

Mar 16, 2015 5:07 AM in response to NoiD™

Another option which could have been available is the ability to revert to a JHFS+ volume. In your specific case, it is no available.

Revertible: No

If you are willing to experiment try

1. Add SSD to the LVG

diskutil cs addDisk B686DAEC-F723-4D7A-A513-F08FF00A7628 disk0s2

2. Remove the HDD after a few days of use (this will allow disk blocks to stabilize).

diskutil cs removeDisk C55057C8-B6D1-44CE-82CF-5C78A0B9AC77

3. Re-add the HDD back to the LVG.

diskutil cs addDisk B686DAEC-F723-4D7A-A513-F08FF00A7628 disk1s2

I know this is hard drive related. But it's very irritating that after a complete wipe and system restore that I'm still unable to install Apple software on an Apple System just after Disk Utilities told me it fixed my system...

Mar 16, 2015 10:42 AM in response to NoiD™

It is encouraging to see disk0s2 as index 0. Do you want to try doing it via a Terminal command?

The following command is used from the Terminal.

diskutil cs resizeStack

Usage: diskutil coreStorage resizeStack

lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode [pvUUID] size

[part1Format part1Name part1Size part2Format part2Name part2Size

part3Format part3Name part3Size ...]

Resize both a logical volume and one of its underlying physical volumes in a

single operation. A single physical volume is always chosen for the underlying

shrink or grow, even if the logical volume's logical volume group is backed by

more than one physical volume. If you do not specify a particular physical

volume, then one is chosen for you. Note that if this is a grow operation,

this verb is limited by the physical volume's partition's room to grow.

Specifying zero as the size asks for an "automatic" grow-to-fill operation.

If this is a shrink operation, you can optionally request that new partitions

be created in the newly-formed free space gap in the partition map.

Again, note that this only resizes one of the underlying physical volumes; if

you need more sophistication in managing your topology, you should use the

separate physical and logical volume resize verbs.

Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeStack

11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 10g JHFS+ New 1g

Mar 16, 2015 12:32 PM in response to NoiD™

The goal is to split your HDD into three parts.

First part is OSX and is roughly X TB.

Second part is 2-X TB for Windows.

Third part is the remainder of the 3TB disk.

Since your iMac is a preUEFI Mac (pre Late 2013), it cannot use EFI. The MSR partition for EFI should also be located in the first 2TB of the designated disk, because it is a FAT partition.

The command will look like

diskutil cs resizeStack 8710B668-FE21-4600-82B5-717B1B7155EB F8B22500-2277-400D-9B29-39C13D40A981 1500g FAT BOOTCAMP 500g JHFS+ OSX-Remainder 0g

It reduces the current Macintosh HD (and the underlying 3TB HDD - the second long string points to disk1s2 in your diskutil cs list output) from 3TB to 1500G, creates a 500G Bootcamp, and leaves the remaining space as JHFS+, which can then be added back to the CS volume.

Mar 16, 2015 4:53 PM in response to Loner T

Here's the message I got when doing that:

diskutil cs resizeStack 8710B668-FE21-4600-82B5-717B1B7155EB F8B22500-2277-400D-9B29-39C13D40A981 1500g FAT BOOTCAMP 300g JHFS+ OSX-Remainder 0g

FAT does not appear to be a valid file system format or partition type
