Message App Problems iOS 8.2 iPhone 5

After i updated iOS 8.2, my message app in my iPhone 5 always freezes. What is the reason behind this? Is there any solution about this problem? Thanks God Bless 🙂

Hello imsuperjb,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you have noticed your Messages application on your iPhone becoming unresponsive after a recent iOS update. In this situation, the next time Messages becomes unresponsive, I would recommend closing the application completely and then open it fresh. Please let me know if the issue conintues.

Hi,

Did you just say you've Restored to Factory Settings?

I've Restored to the Factory condition *and then used an iCloud backup to set the phone up again.* After the (enormous) time involved, my Messages problems are still the same. They actually seemed marginally improved -- no outright blank screens, but lags performance and limited previous messages available -- afterward for a while, and then progressively got worse.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to go back to a clean, Factory Settings situation and then manually rebuild the whole set of apps and menus and so on by hand, or not. If you've gone back to a blank slate and it's persisted, yikes! Can you tell me if that's true?

Thanks.

Hi,

You said you'd been in contact with Apple support, over the phone it sounds like. What sort of approach did they take to problem solving this?

Did they walk you through Restoring from an iCloud backup, and then Restoring to Factory Settings? Those seem to be the escalation procedure for generic system-wide software problems to me, and not at all targeted to this issue. That's what I'm hearing at the Apple Store's Genius Bar, anyway. They readily admit that they're offering the equivalent of a broad-spectrum antibiotic rather than anything targeted to this specific problem.

(I do know several people who've also updated to 8.2 and who don't have this issue. We're "special.")

I went ahead and restored to factory settings then installed a backup, things got marginally better. The issue of loosing my contacts is really worrying however. I was initially relieved to see that all contacts were still intact on my iPad and then in the blink of an eye some dissapeared in line with the ones missing on my iPhone 5. I'm going to restore a previous iPad back up and then isolate my iPhone 5 from iCloud until this issue gets resloved - hopefully I can get them back this way.

I installe from an iCloud backup too, and yeah -- it got a bit better and then slipped back.

The Apple Store person this morning told me my contacts would be available from iCloud even if I didn't use the full iCloud Backup on a new, "Factory Setting" restore. The idea was that logging into iCloud using my usual AppleID and password would get the various iCloud stuff, contacts included, to add to a fresh new system install.

Makes me danged nervous, though.

Here is what I did that solved the problem after trouble shooting with both my carrier and Apple:

1. Moved my pics to Iphoto (so I had them saved to my desktop)

2. Had to see where my contacts where stored first (it was was between aol and google) (hindsight: I should of did some sort of export of contacts first but I didnt know how to do this so I suggest others do this, export your contacts so you can a more updated contact list)

3. Wiped the phone to factory settings

After I did all of that I re downloads all my apps and signed back into my apple id. Lastly I added back emails to retrieve my contacts list. Although it was a bit out of date, my newer numbers where still on the phone. Had a few contact glitches I had to fix but for the most part everything was fine.

Pics - can be moved back to the apple phone too but I didnt want to move any back I had too many to begin with

After I did all of that my phone is now back to normal. According to Apple restoring the back up just adds the "problem"back to the phone. Which makes sense. Advised to wipe and start new

I am not a techie, so if you guys have any questions let me know and I can try to help you through it.

This absolutely is the solution given me by the Genius Bar people. I've gone through the iCloud backup stage, and am now going ahead with the Factory Restore without that.

As you said, it's basically a manual backup process. There are a few incidental apps one would have to think about -- mine being bird lists for example -- and keeping track of those is the hairy part.

Thanks very, very much for posting that.

**Restoring to "Factory" condition without then trying to use my iCloud backup was pretty drastic, but worked for me too.**

The downside is that you really are needing to cobble up all your apps and the settings for them more or less from scratch. However, if you're using iCloud with an Apple ID, logging back into that will (after a delay) restore your contacts and other basic information. It's App-specific stuff that can get lost, and things like photos. Your songs will need to be synched up again from iTunes, and that kind of thing.

To get your apps back:

The list of what you've purchased or downloaded before is on the App Store, at Updates > Purchases > My Purchases.

I would not rely on iCloud magically restoring data for any App -- like my birding list application -- that stores its own data on the phone. There you need to manually back up the data somehow, and then restore it later. I used dropbox for some files like that.

The Apple Support document that describes the extremely basic "Reset" information here is at:

How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - Apple Support

Again, you can't use the iCloud backup they mention, because the problem will be restored with that data.

I Went ahead and performed a factory reset last night and installed everything manually. Messages seem to be back to working as they should. I backed up all my contacts (which were still intact on my iPod) to vcards using iexplorer then reinstalled them on my icloud via desktop. Waste of an evening but at least it looks to be sorted (fingers crossed).

I Had the same issue that some of my contacts had disappeared in the message app. Having read all these solutions I was going to attempt one of them today. However, I have woken up this morning to find they are all back!! So I am wondering if the solution has happened when the phone does the automatic back up overnight whilst plugged into the mains. Mystery. I am in the UK so it's now 7am (nearly)
