get rid of EEventManager.app
EEventManager.app pops up on log in. I must deny/allow it. Neither makes a difference. How to make it disappear?

Delete it from your Login items (System Preferences > Users & Groups) as well as Notification Center Pane.
I don't network connections. Reading above I see it's scanner related, so I'll try and kill it there.
Thanks for the ideas.
Interestingly, EEventManager doesn't show up in Users & Groups or in the Notifications Center. Also can't find it with a global search from Finder. Reading above I see it's an Epson issue, probably the scanner, so I'll dig deeper there.
One of the places I found mine was in the Applications folder; however, in order to avoid any update pop up, you can also check the App Store Pane in System Preferences. Depending on what you have checked there, things will download/notify.
Thanks. Somehow I failed to look inside the Epson folder in Applications. Found it and dumped it. Now for some scanner testing.
