can't open iTunes version 11.4

I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8. I rarely use iTunes but I just upgraded to iTunes 11.4. Now the app won't open at all. I apparently have to upgrade the operating system to download the newest iTunes version (12.1). OS 10.6.8 is working fine for me and I'd rather not download a new OS.

Can I un-install iTunes 11.4 and re-install the older version? Where would I find a version of iTunes compatible with my OS? I don't remember the version of iTunes that I had.

Thank you for your time.

You are welcome. Can you open it from the Applications folder or is that when the icon show briefly in the Dock?

Go to your User/Home folder/Libray/Preferences and move the com.apple.iTunes.plist to your Desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Apple web site doesn't have iTunes 11.4, so I guess I'll have to download it from another site, which makes me nervous (concerned about viruses, malware, etc.). Do you think it's safe to download a version from another site? If so, can you recommend one?

BTW, my original post of this reply was removed by the host because it contain "licensed Apple software". Huh?? It could be because I mentioned the name of a web site that carries old apps.

OR, I could just download OS Yosemite, IF my hardware is still compatible. Not sure what the repercussions of THAT would be.

Thanks.

See the big blue 'Download' button on Eric's linked page? - That is iTunes 11.4 for your OS, from Apple.com

Apple (or the moderators here) do not like people posting links to other sites containing Apple software - it could be malicious when hosted on other sites.

Updating to another OS seems like a risk when you have an app that will not work - it could just leave you with a new OS & the same broken app (or broken app database) & even more work to do to undo it all. Upgrade if you really want to but it doesn't seem like a smart way to resolve this current issue.

You may also want to look for logs when iTunes crashes - /Applications/Utilities/Console will list the logs - see what appears when iTunes crashes, then search for parts of the message online. iTunes may have crash logs too, but please avoid posting them unless someone specifically asks, they can simply make the thread unreadable.

Also create a new user account & try opening iTunes in that account - does that work?
