How do Increase range on an AirPort Extreme?

I am not happy with the range on my AirPort Extreme Router. Had better coverage with a Netgear N600. How do increase the range of this router.

There is no way to improve coverage.. Apple expect you to buy another apple router and use Extend wireless which just means repeater.

Sometimes the issues are due to poor location.. try moving the router around a bit.. high up in the room is often better than low down.. and due to the location of the antennas you should expect next to no signal around the base.. if you are trying to pick up wireless from immediately below the airport on a different floor of the house.

What if I put the Netgear Router in series with the Airporter.

If you mean to ask about connecting the Netgear and AirPort routers together using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection and locate each device in a separate area (at least a few rooms apart from each other) where wireless coverage is needed, that would work well.

Technically, this is called a "roaming network".

You have to configure both routers to use the same wireless network name, use the same wireless security (WPA2 Personal) and the same wireless password.

If the Netgear is already set up, then use that as the "main" router and use the Apple configuration wizard to set up the AirPort to create a new network that uses the same wireless network name and password as the Netgear router.

The real task here is figuring out how to run the Ethernet cable between the Netgear and AirPort. Is that something that you can consider?

Thanks for your help.

I have a few questions about your response.

First what do you mean if the Netgeat is already set up? I was it as my main router until I purchased the AirPorter. So it has been set up on my system. Would you use it as the base station?

second, I am remodeling my house so running cable to handle the second router is no problem. Cat 5 cable or just a long Ethernet cable, which would you use?

thanks again for your help.

You responded to Csound1 with questions on information that he did not provide. Please try to reply to the correct user in the future, to minimize the confusion, thanks.

Exactly what I said.

I was it as my main router until I purchased the AirPorter.

Then, the Netgear is already set up, unless you have changed or deleted the settings.

Would you use it as the base station?

Yes, if it worked well before in that capacity.

CAT 5 is out of date, and will not handle the speed capabilities of faster routers. Use a minimum of CAT 5e, or a better performance choice would be CAT 6. Unless you know how to terminate and test Ethernet cabling, have a pro install the cables.

Do not trust prefabricated cables unless you double check them before you pull the cables, then test again before you seal up the walls.
