Please excuse my pedantry 😁…

I was referring to just the repair feature, not permissions repair.

The verify/ repair buttons will check the file system.

Permissions repair will reset permissions within that filesystem (assuming it is bootable) to use the ones from installers.

It seems probable that Onyx went through an fsck on the boot disk (the same as Disk Utilities repair feature) but it's probably best to confirm the disk is OK with Disk Utility. If the repair fails it could explain why it can't boot.

P.S. Is this Mac Pro supported with 10.9? iIf you have an unsupported model Onyx could have damaged the 'hacky work around'. I think it is just the MacPro1,1 that is not supported.

Hi drew and everyone else, thanks agin for all the response.

I'm currently making a disk image of the hardrive to my external drive, I'm going to leave this over night to save. Hopefully by the morning I'll use the osx recovery to re-install the OSX. I gather the recovery tool will install the latest version of Mavericks over the top of the current system. Will I be able to install directly from the web?

I have two internal hardrives on my Mac, I guess when I install OS X the steps are pretty clear on where to install OS X and if it's a complete install or partial install. I just dont want to loose any data if possible on the hardrive.

Thanks again..

Wow, left it all night to make the hd backup, woke up and it's not even a tenth of the way through. Didn't think it would take this long. Drew I wasn't given an option to make 'new disk image from volume' so I'm assuming this is only backing up the data only. How long does it normally take on an average Mac?

Depends on what you are backing up to & how much data you have. Internal disks should be reasonable unless there is an issue with the hardware.

What are you copying from & onto? Any idea how much data you have?

The 'New image from folder' should be in the file menu but that seems like it won't be any quicker (it still copies the same number of files). I think restore also uses a block copy so it should be quicker.
