MBP Early 2011 memory upgrade

I have an Early 2011 MBP 13". I have four questions:

User uploaded file

I just upgraded to Yosemite, which I am regretting big time. EVERYTHING has slowed down enormously.

So I'm wondering if a memory upgrade will help.

Currently have 2 x 2GB.

User uploaded file

1) Can I upgrade to 8GB?

2) Will it help? (Apple says Yosemite only needs 2GB, but surely that's a joke?)

3) Do I have to buy from Apple or are there equally good alternatives?

4) Can I even ask that on an Apple forum?

Thanks for your help!

First, it would be worth downloading EtreCheck and pasting the results here. It is possible you are running something that is dragging the computer down. That said, I not only agree that the 2GB number is pretty much a joke but even 4GB is too little RAM for a computer with a conventional HHD. For most of us who have an SSD 4GB is more than sufficient. Upgrading to 8GB RAM will help - frankly the biggest help will be upgrading the HHD to an SSD.

Good sources for RAM: Crucial Tech and macsales.com

Good sources for SSD: Samsung, Crucial Tech and macsales.com.

1) Yes. You should be able to upgrade to 16 GB even. Here are OWC's deals for memory upgrades for your Mac.

2) Yes, most definitely. You can also busy an SSD from OWC. That will help even more. Apple's recommendation is no joke. You just have to look at it from Apple's perspective. Running Yosemite on a 2 GB is a very good idea - for Apple. That is almost guaranteed to lead to the purchase of a new Mac.

3) Apple doesn't sell upgrades as far as I know. Most new Macs are not upgradeable at all. You can bump your old Mac with more RAM and an SSD and be back up to speed with an OS 5 years newer than it was designed to run. You won't be able to do that in 2020 with one of these new 2015 machines.

4) Certainly. One of our functions is to provide the kind of support that Apple can't.

Speaking of #4, you might want to consider the purchase of a new Mac instead of upgrading your old one. While you can bump the RAM and the SSD, replacing the logic board is much more expensive. Apple uses the same factories in China that everyone else uses. These machines are designed to last for your 3 years of AppleCare. Apple's expectation is that you will purchase an entire new set of Macs and iDevices every 2-3 years. People who do that are the customers Apple wants and Apple generally gets what it wants. If you want a Mac, that's the world you have to live with. It wouldn't be much different with a PC/Android though - just many more day-to-day annoyances. But the point of my postscript here is that the logic boards do wear out over time. If you spend $500 for max RAM and SSD, your keyboard might stop working. That is exactly what happened to me with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I still have uses for the old one, but it is going to run like a Mac Mini with an external keyboard for the rest of its life.

Thanks for your replies dwb and etresoft

So, here is the EtreCheck file. I suspect i can at least get rid of some of those start up items (I don't use parallels anymore, nor MissingSync, for example). How do I do that? Is there anything else there that could be slowing things down?

The worst speed issues are with Mail, Safari, Xcel, Word, Vectorworks. It's also particularly slow at waking up from sleep, much like my teenage son.

I am reluctant to replace the whole machine - I know it would make Apple happy, but the sheer waste of it upsets me.)

Anyway, here's the file:

Notice the huge list of [Killed]? You have way too much going on before you ever run an application. You have Little Snitch, Missing Sync (and Nokia), PCTools Anti-Virus, Intego Backup Assistant but you seem to be using TimeMachine too, Tuxera NTFS driver (do you need to write to NTFS drives?) and TunnelBear. You have a large list of Internet Plug-ins and Preference Panes.

You need to weed this list out if you intend to keep running a computer with 4GB and an HHD. Fact is, you need to weed this out even if you intend to upgrade it. The anti-virus and Intego products are wasting CPU cycles. LittleSnitch may have value. Missing Sync makes sense if you are using a smart phone for which there’s no other support.

Mar 24, 2015 2:54 PM in response to twfmike

So after dwb walks you through your EntreCheck you should do as he suggests.

Your computer will rip w/ a SSD.

I only deal with OWC and there are many reasons that I do

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/

Never had a problem w/ anything I've ever bought from them in at least 8 years or so. They are Mac specialists so everything they sell works without any hassle.

I on an early 2011 MBP 13" right now.

I put a 120 GB SSD from OWC in it and bumped the RAM to 8 GB. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5. I've been avoiding Yosemite w/ all the issues we see around here.

Photoshop CS 6 opens in 3.4 seconds. I typically have 5 desktops open, 3 browsers, Photoshop and Word and probably an average of 12 windows open at one time. Never see the spinning ball. I went w/ the smaller SSD for budget reasons. If I needed a lot of storage I'd run a conventional hard drive as a disk doubler (Check OWC site for that.) or an external.

Mar 24, 2015 3:08 PM in response to dwb

Thanks dwb. Great news that there is clutter i can get rid of.

Some of this - tunneller - i only use occasionally, but is useful. Much of it is historic that i thought i had removed (antivirus, missing sync, indego, nokia) that can all go. (I need to check if the network drives i use are NTFS before deleting tuxera). But how do i weed these out if they are not in applications?

Mar 24, 2015 3:18 PM in response to twfmike

Check out the vendor websites and see if there are uninstall instructions somewhere on the website or help forum. Don’t be afraid to email support and ask. Some programs include an uninstall option in their installer package. You can also try googling “uninstall missing sync” for example.

Mar 25, 2015 1:46 AM in response to dwb

thanks dwb

Some of the software was quite old, so i couldn't find uninstalls or information, so have spent a couple of hours with app cleaner and ccleaner. Hopefully haven't deleted anything essential.... but it looks a lot tidier. I'll restart and see if it's helped.

L:et me know if there is anything else there that shouldn't be.

Cheers.

Thanks spudnuty

A couple of questions:

Is fitting the memory and SSD easy enough to DIY?

Do i just restore from TimeMachine to carry apps and data to the new drive?

Data Doubler looks interesting, but I do still use DVD drive:

- is it easy to fit the DVD in an enclosure to use as an external drive?

- are there battery issues running the SSD and HD together?

- can it cause overheating issues?

Also - OWC look great but are USA based. I'm in Australia. Can anyone recommend memory & SSD supplier here?

Thanks

Oh no, you are not ready !

Trusteer is a scam, it says that it is a security app, often recommended by stupid bank employees: not easy to uninstall, but you have to uninstall.

Tunnelbear uses a lot of resources, but add to anonymity, but who is sitting on the things you want to hide, where do they live of.

Set GateKeeper at least one step more secure.

Uninstall LittleSnitch: why trust aa app that digs so deep into OSX?

Roxio is not compatible.

Remove both extensions from Safari: instead you may use Adblock if you really want it. Also you could use DuckDuckGo. Adblock and Ghostery are unsafe and dishonest.

Uninstall Growl, Novamedia and Rapport (=Trusteer).

Flip4Mac is not doing anything in Yosemite.

You had rubbish Adobe software on your mac, check all Adobe software, that is still there.

Acrobat is probably too old.

Uninstall TimeMachineEditor.

There are leftovers of PCtools, remove them.

Reorganize your backup structure (TimeMachine disk).

In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, remove all entries with the minus sign underneath, and then restart.

Thanks for your suggestions....

Trusteer is a scam, it says that it is a security app, often recommended by stupid bank employees: not easy to uninstall, but you have to uninstall.

Actually easy to uninstall, but not convinced it's a scam

Tunnelbear uses a lot of resources, but add to anonymity, but who is sitting on the things you want to hide, where do they live of.

- I only use it occasionally. It's useful

Set GateKeeper at least one step more secure.

- How do I do this?

Uninstall LittleSnitch: why trust aa app that digs so deep into OSX?

- Again, i find it useful

Roxio is not compatible.

-OK, gone

Remove both extensions from Safari: instead you may use Adblock if you really want it. Also you could use DuckDuckGo. Adblock and Ghostery are unsafe and dishonest.

Uninstall Growl, Novamedia and Rapport (=Trusteer).

-OK, all gone, I think.

Flip4Mac is not doing anything in Yosemite.

- I read differently somewhere else

You had rubbish Adobe software on your mac, check all Adobe software, that is still there.

-What are you referring to? Which Adobe s/ware is rubbish?

Acrobat is probably too old.

-No, it's up to date

Uninstall TimeMachineEditor.

-Done, I think

There are leftovers of PCtools, remove them.

-Hmmm. there seem to be a lot of dodgy 'miracle uninstall' programs to do this, which I don't like the look of. Otherwise, not sure how to do this.

Reorganize your backup structure (TimeMachine disk).

hmmm. need a bigger back up drive.... this will have to wait

In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, remove all entries with the minus sign underneath, and then restart.

Done

- Trusteer: it is.

- Tunnelbear, it works well, but still...

- SystemPreferences->Security&Privacy->GeneralTab: second from below. You can still open "unknown software" by holding the Alt/Ctl key when opening.

- LittleSnitch: if you are a pro perhaps, but if not do not. Use for what? It used to be commented here: http://www.macmark.de/index.php and in the sublist Werkzeuge.

- Flip4Mac: like Perian, all these codecs are lately built in in most software.

- Adobe maybe hacked, or downloaded from untrustworthy sites and then is unsafe. Since these Adobe softwares are (too) expensive it is common practice to use keygenerators or download from torrent sites (especially in he Windows world).

- PCtools: indeed, your dislike of uninstall programs is correct, most do not clean everything, and there are some that clean too much ! Remove one leftover that has to go: in Finder MacintoshHD->System->Library->Extensions delete the file with pctools.iantivirus in the name. Be careful in this folder.

Waiting for a last etrecheck list to check.
