MBP Early 2011 memory upgrade

I have an Early 2011 MBP 13". I have four questions:

User uploaded file

I just upgraded to Yosemite, which I am regretting big time. EVERYTHING has slowed down enormously.

So I'm wondering if a memory upgrade will help.

Currently have 2 x 2GB.

User uploaded file

1) Can I upgrade to 8GB?

2) Will it help? (Apple says Yosemite only needs 2GB, but surely that's a joke?)

3) Do I have to buy from Apple or are there equally good alternatives?

4) Can I even ask that on an Apple forum?

Thanks for your help!

First, it would be worth downloading EtreCheck and pasting the results here. It is possible you are running something that is dragging the computer down. That said, I not only agree that the 2GB number is pretty much a joke but even 4GB is too little RAM for a computer with a conventional HHD. For most of us who have an SSD 4GB is more than sufficient. Upgrading to 8GB RAM will help - frankly the biggest help will be upgrading the HHD to an SSD.

Good sources for SSD: Samsung, Crucial Tech and macsales.com.

Remove one leftover that has to go: in Finder MacintoshHD->System->Library->Extensions delete the file with pctools.iantivirus in the name.

None of these are visible in that folder:

... and spotlight can't find them anywhere else. Are there hidden folders somewhere?

OK, download a app that is called FindAnyFile from http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

Then install, open, and type iantivirus in the search field and hold the Alt(option) key when you hit the Find Button, type your account password and look what it finds. You can delete directly from the list: "move to trash" (NOT: "delete immediately"). No hits? then do a search for pctools , again move to trash when it is in the list. No hits? then do a search for .kfs (note the period) and if you find more than one, look at every hit to see whether it is the one that you want to delete.

If you do not find anything with this supertool, let it be, it is not loaded and can not do harm on it's own.

Are you satisfied with the results of your cleaning?

But why do Apple say only 8GB supported but OWC say 16?

Apple bases its specs on the kind of RAM that is available when the computer ships and never updates those specs. At a later date manufacturers may introduce new SIMMS/DIMMS that pack more RAM that are compatible with that computer. OWC and other vendors will then change their specs to reflect the new RAM offerings.

Thanks Lex.

It found a couple of antivirus files, and a few parallels ones. I Trashed them all. But.....

they're still there in etre check, though they're not loaded.

Overall, it might have speeded up slightly, but still way way slower than before Yosemite (with good old 10.6.8).

Anyway, will buy some memory and an SSD and see if that helps.

Thanks for your hep.

Read my first post: everything is still there in this last etrecheck list !

Do as I recommended.

Only pctools company does not exist anymore, they were taken by Norton, and there is no information on their products (a.o. iAntivirus) anymore. Norton is about the worst of "security" tools that there is for Mac (even on Windows it creates many problems).
