Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Does it sound like my hard drive needs replacing?

Suggestions on next logical steps to get my Macbook Pro running well again? I've tried software glitches and now somoene's suggested it's the hard drive... which I've got a feeling is probably correct.

1. Does it sound like a hard drive issue?

2. if so, should I do the external drive test - where you load it up with OS/X and run the laptop from that?

  • -If so is that something I can do for a few months while I work out getting the hard drive replaced professionally?
  • And if so should I get a firewire one instead of a normal USB drive- is the firewire faster? J
  • Just concerned that firewire is redundant tech if everything's moving to USB3.0?
  • Could I get a USB3.0 one or is my computer to old to cope?

the problem..

It has been running increasingly slowly over the past year... waiting for the timer thingy on opening all applications. This did get worse for using web browsers after upgrading to Mavericks OS/X 10..9.5

To free up RAM I have installed Memory Clean, which automatically cleans it when the free memory falls low. But Memory clean is constantly mopping up file caches that mount up by the second. I tried various software culprits eg getting rid of Google Chrome plug ins etc and in the end I just uninstalled Chrome and went back to Firefox. But the machine is slow whatever I do. Slow on start up, slow with just 1 program running. Skype often cuts out / crashes, any of the Microsoft Office suite take an age to open.

Memory clean typical readings: [4GB total RAM.] App memory 1.4 GB (typically), Wired 1 GB (typically) and then it's compressed maybe 900 MB.

I showed my Activity Monitor readings to a techie guy I know and he said he saw no reason for the machine to run slow. He suggested it was a hard disk problem. the machine is 4 years old and has been around the world with me and has fallen before now though only from a a heigh of 2 feet... but still ... so maybe it's got brain damage?

I do know the mouse pad underneath it needs cleaning - I had to disable many of the fancy swipe type actions because it was like the cursor arrow on the screen was possessed by a poltergeist. And also the battery is 3.9 years old and has a battery health rating of 69% according to the Battery Health app.

THANK YOU!

You have a plethora of wireless communications software. If you are not using some, delete them from your MBP. Check each vendors site for proper uninstall instructions.

Boot into the recovery partition and select from the 4 option menu Disk Utility.

Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.

If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.

Ciao.

Mar 24, 2015 10:07 AM in response to flightoffancy

So after Oglethorpe and Allan walk you through your EtreCheck report and you're satisfied that your MBP is running fine then upgrade your RAM and put in an SSD.

I also have an early 2011 MBP 13". I upgraded it with 8 GB RAM and a 120 GB SSD all from OWC:

https://www.macsales.com/

I've never had a problem dealing with them in over 8 years. Currently I've upgraded 6 Macs with SSDs and RAM from OWC including my wife's Mini. The oldest being a 2009 MacBook Unibody that the client couldn't afford to upgrade the RAM so it's running Mavericks with a 240 GB SSD and 4 GB RAM. Runs just fine.

On my MBP I'll typically have 5 desktops open, 3 browsers with an average of 4 windows each, Photoshop, stickies and my desktop is so cluttered you can barely see the desktop picture. Photoshop CS 6 opens in 3.4 seconds and Word 2011 in 2 seconds flat!

You seem to need more than a 120 GB HD. Mine is running near the top w/ only 19 GB available (It also took me a minute to find it because of all the clutter on the desktop! Time to get organized.)

Mar 24, 2015 9:42 PM in response to spudnuty

Thank you Spudnuty for the specific advice on what to do / buy.

I've found the OWC products on that website. I found this bundle - would this be the one you used?

OWC DIY Bundle: OWC Data Doubler Kit + 120GB OWC 6G SSD

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDMBS6E120/

It gives the following caveat about my model - which is a 13" MacBookPro8,1

<snip>

MacBook Pro 13" models: Apple does not support the use of 6Gb/s drives in the optical bay. While we have observed a high rate of success using SATA 3.0 6Gb/s drives in Apple 13" bays where 6Gb/s link is present, some systems may not operate properly with this setup. For guaranteed reliability/compatibility, we suggest 6Gb/s drives be used in the main drive bay only, and 3Gb/s hard drives or SSDs be used in the optical bay when a two-drive configuration is desired. We cannot guarantee proper or successful 6Gb/s drive operation in the Apple MacBook Pro 13" optical bay.

</snip>

Mar 24, 2015 9:57 PM in response to flightoffancy

Also - I'm in the UK. Here is the UK online reseller for OWC... http://www.megamac.co.uk/collections/owc-uk Which is where I found this

http://www.megamac.co.uk/collections/ssd-solid-state-disks/products/owc-120gb-me rcury-electra-6g-ssd-owcssd7e6g120

Ah just checking Spudnuty, OWC have 2 types of SSD... the normal one and the one with the go-faster-stripes on it- which kind did you use?

https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/

Mar 24, 2015 10:09 PM in response to flightoffancy

I didn't use the Data Doubler. If I would have done that I would have put a large conventional drive in place of the optical drive. I would have done that if I needed a large amount of storage.

I used the standard SSD. The Extreme has a 5 year warranty which would put me into the year 2020 and I don't think I'm going to have this MBP that long.

So it was the biggest bang for the buck.

Mar 25, 2015 4:33 AM in response to flightoffancy

hello all. howdo.

flightoffancy:

I do have the impression that there still is a lot of rubbish on your mac (see the last post of Ogel, Hi), but even more.

Although the SSD may alleviate your issue, things are by far not as they could be. Some sugestions (in random order):

1. Download AdwareMedic from our Security Professor Thomas reed thesafemac.com

keep it on your ac and run it from time to time.

2. Uninstall unnecessary or counterproductive apps, like BatteryHealth, MemoryClean, MenuMeters, and so on: you do not need those .

3. Uninstall "unclean" softwares like Zoom.Us , and such.

uninstall all your Safari Extensions, perhaps only let Adblock (NOT AdblockPlus!); if you want clean internet use the DuckDuckGo exetnsion in Safari.

4. Uninstall the RealPlayer plugin

5. Uninstall Start Ouc and the rest of the Huawei software and Novamedia: very uncompatible.

6. Remove ALL entries form SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems with the minus sign underneath. Restart after that.

7. uninstall all non standard net apps, like in the list of Ogelthorpe, they are the reason that the apple wireless diagnosis helper does not start anymore.

8. I have more, but start with this and then post a new etrecheck list.

Lex

Mar 25, 2015 5:57 AM in response to Lexiepex

Hello all

Thank you for your really useful suggestions. I have achieved the lion's share of cleaning tasks Ogelthorpe and Lex suggested. And the Mac is definitely running faster. It's still a bit slow. I think I have more spring cleaning / fixing to do.

Exceptions - I couldn't find some of the wireless driver software / ways to remove it - in the list give by Ogelthorpe. I think I've got rid of ZTE and Vodafone detritus but Options, Roland I couldn't see where they are on the Mac. None of the drivers are in listed in Appllications folder anyway so they must have been incompletely uninstalled.

Here is another Etrecheck. Would you be able to give it another look for me, please?

Thank you
