to further clarify: if my iphone is turned off, i can leave a forwarding number on my vm message and it will be received by callers to the iphone? will i be able to view missed calls when i turn the phone back on?
All the voicemail activities (including the outgoing message) take place on the service provider's servers, not on your phone. If the phone is off, or not answered in (usually) thirty seconds, callers will be redirected to the voicemail. If your phone is off most providers will send you a message to tell you there is voicemail when you turn it on again. Exactly how the voicemail works depends on the provider. You may have to pay for message retrieval since it is effectively a call, again this depends on the service provider.
