Tried the smart album but it did not work?

What did not work exactly?

Did the album not populate with images, or did reconnect all not work for the images in the album?

Aperture will only reconnect all, if the images are exactly the same, same name, same size.

If Aperture does not recognize more originals, when you select one, there may be a problem with the filesystem. Is your external drive correctly formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled)?

If the Smart album does not show the effected images. try a different "File status" rule and search for "Missing" as well.

morning, I am importing from a vault but don't have much hope. Do you know what may happen when the new photo comes and I still can't sort things out?

I don't see how a vault can help, since it does not backup any referenced images. It only backs up the Aperture Library.

If you really cannot reconnect the originals from your backup folder on the external drive, you can reimport them as a last ditch resort. But you would have to Lift&Stamp all edits and meta data from the current versions to the new imported originals. Reconnecting individually would be quicker.

The new Photos.app can open your Aperture library and create a Photos library from it. It will need to access the referenced originals and link them in the new library, also create new thumbnails and previews. You will have to fix your library before you migrate, or create a new one.

George,

have you looked at the Manual page that I linked to?

http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=5%26sec tion=16%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Apertur…

It would be really much better if you could get the "reconnect" to work, than importing your original files again from the folder you saved to your external.

The problem is: If you reimport the original image files, you will have the photos exactly as you took them - no meat data, no adjustments.

What I meant by "Lift&Stamp":

The "Lift&Stamp" toll can copy adjustments and metadata from one image version to another.

Select an image, click the "Lift" up-arrow, select the adjustments you want to transfer in the "Lift&Stamp" HUD, then select the image version, where you want to add the lifted data and click the Stamp downarrow.

Like this:

User uploaded file

You could use this to transfer your previous edits from the versions with missing originals to reimported originals and recreate the edited versions this way. But it would be only feasible for a few selected images that cannot be reconnected.

Try to get the "reconnect all" to work. I do not see, why it refuses to reconnect all. There must be something we are overlooking - that you did not mention and I cannot guess.

HHi Lieonie

all this started when I asked on here about trying to save space on the computer by moving the Aperture photos to an external drive, and when I tried I had problems but after some time all looked fine, that was some time ago. I only looked at Aperture two days ago and found this problem. I did have a look at the Apple site and it did help a little but still stuck with only a few that are able to reconnec, so I may have to go tthe lift and stamp route.

THanks for advice on what to do but it looks like I am going to have my work cut out for me for some time hopefully before the new photos comes out.

THanks

Hi Leonie

would you believe it after reimporting from a vault and then doing a first aid from the Apple site that you directed me to everything looks OK. I can now use the adjustments and in maps they are all in the right places. From the looks of things I have only lost three photos that were download after doing a vault. What I would kike to know now is what is the best way to save everything to an external drive.

Once again thanks for all your help and advice and for putting up with me for so long.
