Apple has had an issue earlier with the iTunes Store and various aspects of it's operation. It's mentioned here:

http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

It may take awhile for it to totally clear though.

In the meantime, try the following: Shut down the App Store/ iTunes Store apps from the Multitasking bar:

1.From the Home screen, double-tap the Home button, find the iTunes Store/App Store apps (drag the icons left/right) and swipe up on their respective screen captures, NOT on the icons at the bottom. This will close them.

2. Wait about one minute for the apps to close off

3. Reset the device:

Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)

1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.

2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

After the reset, try again to update the apps.

The system status page says all green.

Scroll down to the bottom of the System Status page. There was an issue between 4pm and 5 pm. Even though it shows all green, these issues almost never instantaneously clear (despite what the page says) and tend to linger depending on your location and other factors.

I'd say, try again tomorrow.

Did all of the above before asking for help. Interestingly - iPhone 6 apps updates are working. iPad Mini now has red ball showing 18 apps need updates (I deleted two "critical" apps and reloaded them from the cloud - updates were in place in the reloaded version).

The Option button for the remaining 18 still show only "Open" - did see - after another reset - the "Update" button appear for a microsecond then turn to "Open" - in case that provides a hint as to what's happening.

FWIW, I'm having the issue too so I can actually troubleshoot as well...

Well, my next troubleshooting procedure did nothing to help the issue. I signed out of the App Store, shut down the App Store app from mutitasking, wait about one minute, then reset the device. After the reset, I signed back in to the App Store but all of my 14 apps that needed updating (testing on my iPad mini 2) all have the OPEN button and no UPDATE button. Tapping the OPEN button only opens the currently installed version of the app. No update takes place. Even if you search for the app in the App Store, there is no UPDATE button and only the OPEN button.

I have three devices here and they are all exhibiting the exact same behavior as described above when it comes to updating apps. Due to this, I can safely say that the issue is on Apple's end and there's likely nothing more that can be done about it until Apple corrects it.

I've tested on two more iOS devices since my last post and all 5 (total) have the issue.

I've contacted Apple Support, to at least alert them to the issue since there is absolutely nothing reported on the System Status page (linked to in a previous post in this topic) as of 3/27/2015 @10:48am. I'd suggest everyone here having the issue contact Apple Support as well. The more that report, the sooner it will be resolved.
