Hi, my iPhone 5 has serious water damage and cannot be repaired but I would like to restore its backup to another phone. But I cannot find the backup in iTunes as it only shows the connected phones. How can I find the 'unconnected' phones backups in itunes (since my iphone5 wont turn on). Also looked in the Library/mobilesyn/backup folder and the backups are for all my devices with no naming convention just large numbers.

Connect the phone that you want to restore to (NOTE: It must have a version of iOS the same or later than the backup you want to restore). Click on its icon in iTunes, then click Restore Backup. Choose the backup you want to restore from the dropdown that appears.
Thanks Lawrence, thats exactly my problem, my old iphone 5 wont even switch on or charge (water damaged) so when i connect it, it makes no difference. I can only see my iPhone 6 in itunes that is connected via WiFi.
You misunderstood. Do not connect the damaged phone; connect the phone you want to restore the backup to. Assuming you have a backup of the damaged phone.
And here in lies the other problem, I would like to restore it to an android device i.e. just the photos and data... Do you know if that would be possible without having to buy an extraction software.

It's not possible to restore iOS data to an Android device, except for photos. If you have not imported your photos to your computer you will need backup extraction software for your computer. There are free iPhone backup extractors.
