MacBook 2 gig Ram running slow after migration from Snow Leopard to Yosemite

I had two online techs help with this issue, and the computer is worse....extremely slow to boot, with Mail, Safari, System Preferences taking minutes to load, and then disappear and come back. It worked better before the techs did Recovery Mode, reset SMC, and had me move cache items to trash. I have not deleted trash, so there may be something in it that shouldn't be there. My computer can take 4 gig Ram....do I need to upgrade, but will that take care of all these problems?

Thanks, Miquolyn

There are people who know way better than I do. But from what I've read, you should upgrade, and it should help. I think I read that Yosemite claims 2GB RAM minimum, but actually needs more.

Even though the original specs list the maximum RAM for the 2010 MacBook as 4GB, OWC tested and found that it can actually take 16GB. I just picked up a 2010 model myself, and plan to upgrade to the full 16GB. I don't have links, but pretty sure I read that even with 8GB, some people felt like Yosemite was sluggish.

Here's more info about the 16GB RAM, and how to upgrade—http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/macbook-white-unibody-faq/macbook- white-unibody-how-to-upgrade-ram-memory-…

If you buy the RAM from OWC, it costs around $160. The same basic RAM from amazon, but a different company and without OWC's warranty is around $125.

Other people might post back and suggest 8GB instead of 16GB. Again, I'm not a pro. Best of luck.

Egg151 has it absolutely correct, you can install up to 16 GB RAM in your MBP. I would order it from OWC, They will guarantee that it will work, RAM from others may be questionable.

I do not know with certainty what the 'online techs' did, but it raises a red flag. Who were these? Were they from Apple Support where you called or was is a result of an advertisement or warning on the Internet?

The support I received was from Apple techs on the phone and chat at Apple Support. Here is the EtreCheck...looks like I need memory. Does Apple sell the memory upgrade...couldn't find any at their store? Thanks for your reply. Miquolyn

Yosemite to run efficiently should realistically have 8 GB RAM. 16 GB would be nice but not essential. The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are QWC and Crucial.

I also notice that you have several communications vendors software installed; Novatel, Sierra and RIM. Delete what you are not using, especially RIM. If you no longer have a Blackberry, you do not need the RIM software which has caused problems for other users.

Ciao.

Once you finish with the stellar help available around here..

RAM can be purchased here:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade

I have an early 2010 MBP 13" that I bumped up to 8 GB.

I also added a 120 GB SSD from them:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/

Here's how it's running now and has been for the last 5 months:

Startup

Photoshop CS 6 open job:

It's running Mavericks, 10.9.5. I'm avoiding Yosemite due to problems I see reported around here.

Thanks Oglethorpe, this is stopping, hanging, so hope I can make sense here. I have never had a Blackberry or any other smart phone...just a flip phone. Wonder if the files you mentioned could be connected to my video or digital cameras?? Where do I find OWC memory? Is it better than Apples, or do they supply memory upgrades? I'll be near a Genius Bar at Apple Store next week, so should I let them add the 16 gigs of memory chips. I've done it before on PC's successfully, but want to be sure I have a warranty this time. My date/time, and Mailbox take 2 - 4 minutes to load, and then I have to click the "fix" to connect the mail server.....could this be problems with my IP. or is this another issue with Yosemite? Thanks again for your assistance. Miquolyn

Here is the link to OWC RAM:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

This the Crucial web site:

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Apple/macbook-pro-%2813-inc h%2C-mid-2010%29

Installing RAM yourself is easy. There should be instructions in the manual you got with the MBP. There are video instructions on the OWC web site and pictorial ones at iFixit.com. You do need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers.

What counts is that the RAM be compatible with a Mac. RAM from Apple, OWC and Crucial are all compatible. There are some brands that are not so. Compare the OWC and Crucial prices with what Apple will charge and then decide.

I do not question that you may never have had a Blackberry, but those files are there and should be deleted as well as possibly some others.

Ciao.
