Cold Boot vrs Warm Restart ,,, Differences?

I've asked elsewhere to no avail. Maybe you "hardcore" programmers might have a feel for the answer.

On a Cold Boot, my QS under 10.3.9 doesn't give me the same setup as a warm restart.

Mainly ...

Cold Boot = Bad Parameters in Auto DHCP Network
Warm Restart = Good Parameters in Auto DHCP Network, and Browser Connectivity.

I'm using an Asanté 10/100 ethernet PCI card with DEC chipset, which I'm finding "most likely" is supported by Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext which is a part of IONetworkingFamily.kext. Specifically, the card is an AsantéFast 10/100 (09-00169-01 Rev C with Digital Chip 21140-AF).

I extracted the System Log of Cold Boot vrs Warm Restart, and am hoping this doesn't violate Forum Posting Rules. Does this show the problem?

Voyeurs welcome:

Hi Bill,

“Think you used enough partitions there, Butch?”

Sorry, that's a joke. The main difference I see between the boot logs is the Delta Helper output. That MAudioDeltaFamily.kext extension appears to be loaded by a StartupItem, which is unusual. It doesn't look like anything happens after that. I gather that you rebooted after the first warm boot. Since that software appears to be third party, it's certainly a good candidate for the cause of the problem.

I'm not sure why the Delta Helper would load during a warm boot but not a cold one. However, I postulate that one difference between the two types of boot is whether or not extensions are loaded from cache. From your other thread here I know that you've been "playing" with your extensions so based that, I'm further guessing that your cache is "out of sync" with the actual set of extensions in the /System/Library/Extensions directory.

I believe that the cache is "in" the following files:

/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
/System/Library/Extensions.mkext

With a "sudo mv" command you could move those "out of the way". If you do that, I recommend moving the files somewhere on the boot drive in case you have to restore them in single user mode. However, I'm pretty sure they are recreated by the system during reboot. If not, you should be able to move the originals back.

I performed the following:

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache $HOME

and

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions.mkext $HOME

My system continued to exhibit the same Cold Boot/Warm Restart behavior of seeming to be out of sync. It was doing this all along ... from when I first installed the Asanté ethernet card.

Any more clues as to how I might remedy this situation appreciated. I've tried removing the battery, doing a PRAM Reset ... perhaps removing the M-Audio card might give way to more ideas?

Comments on the use of "$HOME" welcomed, also. I picked that up from someone getting me to sudo mv the Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext properly from the IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins to a retrievable location.

Are Terminal Commands explained elsewhere besides "man _" in Terminal? Something like a Unix for Dummies Book?

PS I'm a graduate of running OS X on XPostfacto's PPC 8500/9500 ... hence the partitioning scheme carry-over. I like my Apps separate from my Docs separate from the OSs.

And then there's the Pre-Leopard Time Machine warp factor giving way to Backup Partitions.

I refer any readers to the following Apple Document about "Self-assigned IP Addresses":

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106879

It states how to "solve" the problem ... either Restart (which I knew about), or force DHCP to re-assign by turning off the ethernet port card connection, and turning it back on using the steps in the Document and Network.

Neither is an acceptible end result.

Ideas? I thought I read something in Apple Docs about adding the Asanté cards "number" to some list somewhere in the Extensions files ... that would affect a connection ... now to find that again ...

Hi Bill,
For what it's worth, there's a way to release and renew the lease from the command line:

sudo ipconfig set en0 NONE
sudo ipconfig set en0 DHCP

These commands assume that the network interface in question is en0. You haven't posted anything that tells me what it is but you can find out for youself with the "ifconfig" command.

I told you that I found one driver difficult to delete. It was for a SCSI card and I remember thinking at the time that it actually had drivers on the card. Looking back that seems unlikely because it would probably need several of them and how would it know what version of what operating system was involved to know which driver to install? In any case though, you might have to take that card out to get a cold boot that doesn't load the driver. Obviously that's not a permanent solution but it would verify that the driver is causing your problems and give you something with which to go to the manufacturer.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of good grammar.

What a crock. I could easily overemphasize the importance of good grammar. For example, I could say: "Bad grammar is the leading cause of slow, painful death in North America," or "Without good grammar, the United States would have lost World War II."

Asanté just responded that this card is no longer supported by them, having been discontinued in 1998 and only driver supported through OS 9.2.2. Can't blame them.

I believe if there is some way for me to "Terminal Script In" those commands, so that at Startup, the switching of NONE/DHCP occurs, and would reset the Network assignment of IP Addresses, I'd be satisfied.

The Asanté PCI card was assigned "en1", en0 left for the now bad/partially gone onboard ethernet connection ... en0 still shows up as an Apple gmac+ in Network Utility.

Oh ... also in Network Utility, it shows the Asanté yielding a large number of Transfer Errors ... Sends ... so the card may not really be working so great.

Maybe I should surrender, and buy a more modern card or USB/Ethernet Wireless ... to better protect against lightening.

That quote from System Profiler certainly left things wide open ...

Anyway, I am wondering (probably finally) if the link here:
DECChip 21140 OPENSTEP Driver Overview
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=72247

has a possible solution to my lookup problem. Brief quote:

"Newer versions of the Cogent EM110 that use the DECchip21140A need to have the following line added to the Instance table in order for them to determine their ethernet address:
"Address Offset" = "20""

And how might this be accomplished in OS X 10.3.9?

My Chip Serial/ID number had an AF in it.

Hi Bill,
I'm afraid I know nothing about that. That's impressive finding that article but keep in mind that it's 8 years old. It's probably referring to a driver for OS 8. However given the company's statement of "support", that could very well be their latest driver for Mac.
