Just starting to use the ipod. Can I get AM radio?

No. FM only on those models that have it.

Apple only offers FM on their recent iPods and other products.

I have a Sony clock radio with a 30-pin dock that features AM/FM so I can use that to listen to some local stations

My iPod classic now lives permanently as a music source with the radio
