there is a billing problem with a family member's previous purchase

I recently updated my credit card expiration date and CID. This credit card is the authorized shared payment medium for my "family" group.

I am the family organizer and two other individuals are "adults".

Now, when attempting to update applications via the app store on my own devices, I get the following error message:

There is a billing problem with a family member's previous purchase. Ask the family organizer to update their billing information.

I have a valid card entered and the rest of my billing information was accepted via the apple store.

Thoughts?

I just had the same problem (Xmas Day 2015) and logged into everyone's iTunes account and checked their billing info. One of the kids had a highlighted purchase in red that wasn't accepted which caused the problem for everyone else in the family sharing group.

We were using a pre-paid store purchased VISA card, which had just run out of money.

FIX - purchased a new card with funds, logged back into the iTunes account which owed the $8 and the payment automatically went through. It is an immediate fix for the rest of the family sharing group.

I hope this helps.

5 DIGIT ZIP CODE- FIXED! I tried everything to fix the same problem because the credit card expired and I made a purchase. I updated the credit card info on my husbands iPhone several times, with no luck , until I deleted the extra 4 digits from our zip code- problem fixed instantly! When the card was originally saved on the iPhone , we just used our 5 digit zip code, at some point apple added the +4. I apologize for replying to an old post, but nothing on this site was helpful, an easy solution would have saved me a few hours of frustration!

SAME PROBLEM, BUT STARTED WITH: What I figured out how to do (ON MY OWN) while on hold with Apple all day yesterday. You have to actually END THE FAMILY COMPLETELY. From there, make sure you add a CREDIT, not a debit, card to the account as your primary source of funds. Now, that should correct everything, right?!? The whole reason I was having to do this was due to the fact that Apple now allows 'child accounts', so I didn't have to make my 9 and 11 year old children appear to be 13 just to have an appleID. This birth-year change can be done at appleid.apple.com under the security questions section (scroll to the bottom to find). From this point you will be prompted to verify the birthdate change and to make it a Child ID. Approving this process became a problem because I did not have a CREDIT card on file to prove I was an adult. Very upsetting. Anyhow, all of that got taken care of, and I am now unable to do any updates, and my children are not able to download the apps and games they want from 3000 miles away when they "Ask to Buy". I'll be calling Apple (again) and will re-post if I find anything out, since not much is being done about this situation.

I have now been hung up on THREE TIMES during calls because these employees don't know how to go through the proper channels to give help. I have not received the "callback" even after giving out my number. ... This is the main reason I stayed away from apple for so long. Now that I have issues, nobody knows the answers. FYI, I have been a member of the Geek Squad for 7 years, and this is truly a moment of realization that I am glad I never worked for such a hipster company (yeah i took the low road and used name-calling, deal with it). This is embarrassing that I am having to go through such trauma just to get someone who knows what they are talking about in this matter.

***SOLVED***

You all need to contact apple (they don't get a capital letter anymore from me) and have them go through and find where other family members may have made a purchase that has not been covered by your card on file (for example I would use a prepaid Google Wallet debit card to avoid my kids getting out of hand and spending $1000's on micro-transactions). There is most likely a charge on one of their apple ID's which, if you are in my boat, you can demand a refund and clear out the account/get some credit back and show no negative behavior on the account. After all is $0.00, your phone will update it's apps again, and your children will be able to download things. You're welcome.
