Tivo, Smart TV and Apple TV
I am new to Tivo. I can get the Apple TV to work, except for audio. It will only play the audio coming from the channel on the TV via the Tivo. Is there a solution?

Please explain a little more, where does the TiVo fit in.
I had standard cable. I upgraded to Tivo. How the Apple TV connects is the same way. HDMI cable from Apple TV to HDMI port 4 on Samsung Smart TV. Previously, I had to turn off the cable box for the audio to work on the Apple TV. Now, if I turn off the "cable box" TIVO, it turns off the TV.
From what I have seen on the TIVO blogs, Apple TV is not compatible with TIVO. I was hoping it wasn't so.
They aren't anything to do with each other, except that they perform similar roles as input devices for your TV. What exactly were you hoping you could do with these devices.
The ATV has nothing to do with the Tivo. Presumably you have more than one HDMI port on your TV, and what is happening is that the TIVO is switching the TV to itself. There is probably a setting in the TV for disabling HDMI Control which should put a stop to this. The set should switch back to the ATV when the TIVO is in standby but with the ATV being on all the time this causes problems with auto switching.
For me, the Tivo does everything I need it to. Myhusband wants to be able to use his iphone to control the tv via Apple TV. I will try Roger Wilmut1's suggestion and see if that works. I'll re-post if it works.
I have a look around the settings on the TV. I don't recall seeing an ability to disable the HDMI, but I'll check it out. Will post to let you know if I was successful ot not. THANK YOU!
If he wishes to control whats on the Apple TV using his phone, he needs to download the Apple Remote app from the App Store on his phone. He can also send content from his phone to the Apple TV using AirPlay.
You would probably be better using the remote control for the TV to switch between the HDMI inputs, that way there will be no confusion about what is happening.
He will not be able to control the TV itself using the apple Tv. He can control the Apple Tv's options, as in select an App, playback content etc.. but there is no actual TV control from there.
Some Smart Tv manufacturers make Apps that may allow some degree of control, but the apple Tv will not be involved. ITs directly between the App on the iPhone, and the Tv.
Search the App Store for an App from the Manufacturer of your TV.
He has been doing that successfully for six months. It is since we swapped out the standard cable box to the TIVO that it doesn't work. We have video, no audio.
The Apple TV was working just swell via the Apple TV app from his iPhone UNTIL we swapped out the standard cable box for the Tivo box. :-(
Look for a setting to disable HDMI-CEC on the TV and/or the Tivo (though I couldn't find any reference to this in the Tivo manual - I don't actually have a Tivo box to try).
The Cable company is coming out between now and 9 p.m. I'll ask him if he has these answers. I'm a blonde with a head injury who is ready to chuck the TV, TIVO and Apple TV out into the snow! ;-)
So is the issue that there is just no sound from the Apple TV when you are watching the Apple TV. Do any of the devices use an optical audio cable or just HDMI cables.
There is an optical outlet on the Apple TV box, but how will that override the television volume from coimg through? I'll have to dig around and see if I have an optical cable laying around.
