Turns out I have a flaky power cord, it was going from charging to not charging every time the cord changed angles. I seem to have this problem with a lot of these cords; I have gone through a bunch of them and don't think I am doing anything abusive to them. So now I am looking for a well built, durable USB to iPhone power cord.
If you buy a 3rd part USB cable, make sure it is approved by Apple. Since iOS8 the software will check the compatibility of the used accessory.
