"Redirect" mail to junkmail, not junkmail

This is probably a pretty straightforward question, although I wanted to ask before setting up thousands of messages. In the apple OS X Server mail admin manual, it says that for automated spam assistant filtering, emailing should be "redirected" to junkmail or notjunkmail. Now, redirect is in quotes and seems very specific, so I'm guessing that forwarding all the junk mail from my accounts to junkmail and forwarding all my usual mail to notjunkmail is not the way to go? Is "forwarding" the same as "redirecting" in this instance?

Forwarding and redirecting are different.
To the spam filter, a forwarded mail will look like it originated from the forwarder (which is not desirable unless you want to blacklist yourself). Redirecting on the other hand, will preserve the original sender's headers.

In short, do not forward!

If you happen to use a mail client that cannot redirect you can still connect to your junkmail/notjunkmail mailboxes via IMAP and just drag the messages over.

aha! I figured as much the forwarding from address would result in something like that. I've used POP for everything for a very long time so Ive never really experienced the whole redirect thing.

So, listening to what you described, it would be feasible to have all my POP accounts and then create IMAP accounts for my junk/nonjunk and copy the emails over in apple mail?

Thanks so much for helping me out!

P.S. Quick aside.. i have junkmail and notjunkmail@primarydomain.com
Do I need just one set of these to train the server, or do I need several depending on the domains i host (i host around 25-50 domains for email)

Yes. However Apple Mail is capable of redirecting as well.

Just one set is enough.

Excellent! Thanks for the rest of the info!
I think I've got it almost down pat. I surfed a ton of your other boards and got spamtrainer up and running, and my stats look something like this:

0.000 0 28754 0 non-token data: ham
0.000 0 3515 0 non-token data: spam

The only thing I haven't figured out is how to get the email checked to auto-delete once spamtrainer's done. It seems to remain there.
