hinge stand problem screen falls forward

The stand on my 27" iMac no longer holds the screen in a position I choose. If I put it in the required position five minutes later it has flopped down again

has anyone else had this problem?

Whats the solution?

I would definitely contact Apple; although your Machine is no longer covered by a warranty, there have been numerous failures of the plastic hinges - I'd point Apple to this discussion:

Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

In order to avoid a charge to talk to them, why not book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar and show them the iMac (take along a note with the URL address of both your and the discussion I linked to (or have it ready to be looked at on your screen.

As it is a MId 2011 iMac it is not covered by warranty and Apple want £25 before I can even chat to one of their people about it. We have just bought this iMac used and this is it's only problem (apart from a sticking keyboard) and wondered if anyone else had had the same problem and if Apple recognised it as a hardware failure and were sorting them out of warranty. As it is 150 mile round trip to our nearest Apple store I could do with some advice or idea of cost before taking the time and money to take it to the store

A 2011 machine would not be covered by any warranty, you are pretty much on your own to get it fixed. Hopefully the original owner supplied the 10.6.x discs and wiped the computer 100% clean prior to selling it. If they didn't they you need to buy 10.6.x from Apple (available on Apple's online store for about $20) and wipe it clean. If the machine came with any application software that the original owner paid for or downloaded, that is not yours per the licenses. The only exception to that is the iLife suite that originally came with the computer.

Good luck.

I don't see that software has any relevance to my post. I am certainly not an Apple novice this is my tenth Apple machine (plus various other Apple equipment).... of course the previous owner wiped it clean.

Apple do not SELL their operating system anymore it is easily downloaded from the App store and the previous owner put a fresh install of YOSEMITE on before shipping. As for programmes they downloaded I have my own software and software licences but as I said this is of no bearing on the problem with the hinge which is clearly a hardware problem.

All I was doing was reaching out to the Apple community to see if anyone else had any experience of this problem and if anyone knew of the cost implications or a fix

Hey sorry, I turned off my mind reading app a week ago and didn't realize you have used Macs for the past 10 years. Many people that post on these forums that have purchased used machines are first time Mac owners that are not familiar with SLA's, particularly Apple's. I mistakenly took you for a neophyte.

As for the cost of repair, that will vary by where on the planet you reside, had you completed a profile we would have some bare facts about your system and where the machine is located. I'd suggest you call your local Apple Store and AASPs for price quotes.

My 27" iMac has the same problem, only I heard a loud cracking noise and the monitor fell forward. I can't get it back to vertical without jamming something behind it for support. This machine isn't a year old yet and a major piece of Hardware just broke! Did I really pay over $2000.00 for this thing!

I guess I am luck I've got 2 Apple Stores I can take it to, but Not having a car means I have to lug this thing on the bus!!

This is not a fun thing to have happened and I am really disappointed with Apple, I should not be worrying about my Apple Care right now, it's a long weekend, I should be having fun and playing StarCraft II!!

Mississauga Mark,

If your machine is a 2012 or later 27" iMac then it's covered by warranty. If you have AppleCare and are with 2 hours of any AASP, you can request in-home care in the US and also believe Canada.

It's a late 2013 and I've even got extended AppleCare, What annoys me is that I can't get an appointment setup anytime before Wednesday. It's Saturday tomorrow, and I have a day off on Monday, and Wednesday is the best I can get.

Right now I have a coaster jammed between the Monitor and the Stand, I needed something thin that won't block the Vent on the back. I suspect that it will probably slip off soon since everything is curved on the back!

I had a chat with Apple Support and I have no choice but to carry it in. I only hope that it is the last time I will have to bring it in. I've heard that some people have had their iMac replaced because it is difficult to open up these new iMacs, I don't know if that applies to the 27" models or not, but I will have to Carbon Copy Clone my drive, delete browser history, and make sure that I don't lose all my RAM.

I also don't have a great deal of confidence in a repair or replace with the same part, I don't want to continue doing this every year or so!

This problem has been discussed before many times I am sure Apple is aware of it. In other threads Apple has been said to know it is a design problem and will take care it out of warranty but I am not sure. Mine hasn't done the flop yet I have Apple Care. I still believe Apple will stand behind their products. I've own Apple Computers since my old Apple II GS. Just my 2 cents.

I understand your frustration and Apple is aware of the issue. I doubt they are using the same part, at some point it has probably been re-designed however you should ask about that when you take it in. Apple has a history of replacing machines covered by AppleCare if there is a problem occurs 2-3 times however considering this may be your first problem I wouldn't get my hopes up. If you bought it directly from Apple, then you can ask. If you bought it from a reseller then an Apple Store may not be as open to the idea.
