iPhone5 and Pioneer SPH-DA120 Connection Problem

Hi,

I have recently installed a Pioneer SPH-DA120 car stereo with Apple CarPlay. The stereo can be linked to an iPhone via bluetooth or a lightning adaptor. Once the iPhone and stereo are linked I was undertake impression that Apple CarPlay would automatically start and give me access to CarPlay apps (phone, music, maps, messages, and siri).

The problem is that CarPlay isn't starting when the phone is connected. When paired via bluetooth the stereo can access the music files on my iPhone and also the contacts list. The same thing happens when it is connected via the cable. But in both situations the CarPlay does not seem to register the iPhone and start up as it should. I can make calls and listen to music but that only half of the functionality I thought I would get. The iPhone also charges through the cable so I'm fairly certain that cables are installed correctly. And I have tried both of the USB connections plug that come out of the stereo.

It is an iPhone 5 with iOS 8.2 installed and the stereo is a Pioneer SPH-DA120 with Firmware version 1.08.

Has anyone else had this issue and knows how to get full access to CarPlay?

I've done some more investigation. A iPhone with an older iOS worked fine. So, Pioneer need to update the firmware for iOS 8.2. It looks like its the waiting game for me now then😐

I run into the exact same problem as you, but I was finally able to fix it.

My problem was as follows:

  • iPhone connected to the Pioneer without problem and was able to play music
  • iPhone recognises CarPlay and asks you wether you will allow CarPlay from the lock screen
  • iPhone won't start CarPlay as usual

The solution is to reenable the device type in the smartphone setup which can be found in the settings.

See my response I dropped here:

I recently got some issues with Apple CarPlay (on my Pioneer AppRadio 4 SPH-DA120) and iOS 8.3. I want to drop my information here, because I found this thread while searching for my problem:

  • Version 1.08 is a pre-installed version on Pioneer AppRadio 4 and not publicly available. Even the Pioneer employees were surprised, because they neither find this version on their website nor on their server. The currently available firmware is 1.07 and downloadable through the Support Page of Pioneer Electronics.
  • CarPlay does not not work on the SPH-DA120 if its not plugged in the upper USB port. You can check this from the main menu of the Pioneer: there are two different buttons for both USB ports, make sure USB 1 is activated.
  • CarPlay does not work if the settings point to "Smartphone" instead of "iPhone/iPod". You can check this in the settings for connecting / setup your smartphone. It must point to "iPhone/iPod" and the connectivity type "USB". (This setting may reset if you disconnect your Pioneer from the power source, which could be the case when you bring your car to service. Make sure you always check this, if there are any issues with CarPlay not starting, even if the iPhone correctly recognises the CarPlay unit.)
  • In iOS 8.3 there were some updates and fixes for Apple CarPlay so make sure you updated to the latest version of iOS and the Pioneer which is 1.07 or 1.08.

Hi!

I installed yesterday Pioneer SPH-DA120 player with 1.08 firmware for my car and I have iPhone5 with iOS 8.4.1.

I couldn't get Carplay to work. Same symptons as in first post. So do I need to downgrade iOS version somehow or what

I can do to make carplay to work?
