Canon lbp6500 printer installation on Mac OSX 10.9

I have Macbook Pro Air 13" with Mac OSX 10.9. I tried installing the Canon LBP6500dn driver in Mac OSX 10.7 in Macbook Pro 15" and it works fine. I am also able to print even though the driver is showing as Generic PostScript. It fails to run on the Macbook Air with 10.9. So I download the driver from Canon and ran the dmg file. Then went to the Printers and searched with the IPaddress (installed in the organization and working fine with all other Windows devices as well) but it lists Generic PostScript driver so I click on OK and Add. While trying to print, it keeps printing from the printer and that too it gives an incorrect format. The printout looks absolutely like a script and also says something about Adobe even though I tried printing from different sources like email client, web browser, excel, word, etc. Any suggestions please?

MacBook Air, Mac OS 9.0.x

You get this sort of output, which is Postscript commands, when you use a Postscript driver to a printer that does not support the Postscript printing language.

I'm having trouble locating information about this LBP6500 but I would guess that it supports one of Canon's proprietary printer languages like UFR2 or CAPT. The driver you downloaded would indicate the supported printer language. Also, you could look at the Windows computers to determine which Canon printer driver they are using - I'm confident it won't be Postscript.

So the solution is to create the printer again, but this time you will need to manually select the LBP6500 driver that you have installed instead of using the Generic Postscript driver that is included with OS X. First step is to remove the current printer that is using the Generic Postscript driver. (If you use Eric's ill informed printer reset then this will have already removed all printers on your Mac) Next step is to click the plus button to add the printer and enter the correct network details as before. Then, if OS X auto selects the Generic Postscript driver again, you need to click on this drop menu and click "Select Software". This will present the Printer Software window where you can browse for the LBP6500. Once found, select it and click the OK button. Then click the Add button to complete the printer creation. Now you should be able to print correctly.

I already tried with "Select software" before posting this in the forum. It says "Cannot connect to the printer" whereas I can ping the printer from the same system. All other printers works fine after installation of the drivers but not this particular one. I tried to install this driver for the Mac OSX 10.9 http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/imageclass _series/imageclass_lbp6650dn#DriversAndS…

The "Cannot connect to the printer" occurs when you select an IP protocol not supported by the printer. IPP doesn't work so try LPD or HP Jetdirect. And if you have an issue with LPD then it could be due to it being disabled. Note that the Windows computers will use RAW Port 9100 which is HP Jetdirect on the Mac.

Also the link you have provided is to the LBP6650, not LBP6500. So which model do you have? I ask as it can determine which driver to use. As mentioned above, there is a CAPT driver and a UFR2 driver and if the printer supports one of these printer languages then it will not support the other one. And as also mentioned above, you could confirm what driver to use by checking what the Windows computers are using.

I solved the issue. Even after selecting LPD and Adding the printer, I had to go to Options and select the model of the printer to make it working.

Well done. I've never seen a model listed under the Options tab so I would have never suggested you try that.

Btw, What are the differences between a CAPT and UFR2 drivers?

Both are a type of GDI (raster) language, much like what you get with inkjet printers. CAPT is old and has been replaced by UFR2. So there is a finite set of older Canon LBP models that are supported by the CAPT driver, while the UFR2 driver is used in new models of LBP and multifunctionals like the MF and imageRUNNER devices.
