iMessage activation error

My iPod touch 4th Gen iOS 6.1.6 just kicked me off iMessage and FaceTime and will not verify my account. I've tried restarting ipod, restoring ipod, changing apple ID, changing the DNS server and tried using the old ID and the new ID and both ID email accounts and nothing! I have received two messages at different times, one was "an error occurred during activation" and the other was "unable to contact iMessage Server." I know my password is correct and both email addresses are valid. I can search on Safari so the wifi is working fine.
