10.10.3 Finder Status Bar information is wrong, TB not GB

Have you noticed how the 10.10.3 Finder Status Bar information is wrong and it shows Terabytes left on a drive of 750 GB after update. See attached. This is not possible

Try re-indexing the drive for Spotlight and see if the information corrects itself. That display is not a reliable indicator of used or available space. Instead use what is displayed for a selected drive by pressing COMMAND-I.

YES. This is a Time Machine / Finder bug.

<<<< EXTENSIVE TESTING >>>>

I have had the 2.89 PB Available (or similar) on and off for several iterations of reinstalls, clean wipes of HD, reinstall clean image.

The problem will go away on a new install and come back shortly there after.

Uninstalled Box Sync

Thought it was a Dropbox sync issue.

NONE OF THE ABOVE.

When I disable Time Machine and restart ---> I can CLEARLY see that the finder upon opening says 2.89 PB available, followed by a quick "wait spin" icon for about half a second after which the FINDER refreshes and shows correctly that 624 GB are free.

AND (get this...) I can toggle ON and OFF the Time Machine via System Preferences and the Finder will correct itself and then mysteriously start multiplying available disk space.

"Time Machine OFF" is the only solution to correct read of the disk for now.

Turning off Time Machine via System Preferences worked for us, it seems.

But seriously, Apple is obviously doing a bad job with it's OS. We spend more time at work fixing bugs than working. Our Windows user friends in the offices are laughing and giggling.

And by the way, turning off Time Machine isn't the greatest solution for a business.

Indeed, turning off Time Machine isn't the greatest solution for a business. Is it really necessary?

I've found just disabling local backups to be an effective workaround for what seems to be just a cosmetic, if unsettling problem. At the moment my MacBook Pro isn't travelling — the case for your machines too? — and I'm still getting hourly TM backups.

To ekick and joao_oliv (see posts below):

Thank you for your suggestions! I had the same problem and your suggestion remedied it. I did this 1 week ago (and had turned TM backups back on a week ago) and the problem has not recurred this past week, even with TM backups running the whole time.

I had the same problem, what helped was deactivating Time Machine in the TM-settings - restart - then activate TM machine again. But after a while and some TM backups the problem reoccured.

By disabling the TimeMachine > Restarting > enabling it again... it fixed on boot but shortly after (5 min) it goes back into (TB or PB values)

Cheers

The short answer to your question is: possibly, yes. Since I last posted about this problem my 2008 MBP sadly passed away (serious GPU failure that's uneconomic / impossible to fix) and I used the SSD from that machine to set up my new rMBP. Lo and behold, the problem came across along with the rest of my data! I decided that it was just as easy to leave Time Machine disabled so that I would always be able to see correct storage info and just activate 'manually' to make TM backups whenever I needed to. For me this was a completely satisfactory compromise. However, since updating to 10.10.4 on 30th June I've left TM 'On' to see if the problem would recur and it hasn't. Obviously this isn't conclusive evidence that there's been a fix in 10.10.4 but it hasn't previously taken this long to reappear. Fingers are well and truly plaited! This hasn't been a make or break issue for me as both MBPs have been otherwise working normally but it is slightly disappointing that (by all reports here) Apple weren't able to identify a definitive fix, or admit there was an issue that would be addressed in an upcoming OSX update, to save all the speculative fiddling / resetting / reinstalling that did absolutely nothing to cure the problem.

Thanks Mempoule for the answer. Happy it worked for you (but sad about the 2008 MBP).

But, from other discussions and articles I'm reading, it seems a better idea to stay clear of this update. I've been having other problems (WiFi of course and a whole list of other bugs) since the 10.10.3 update. Small fixes like turning off TM fixed the "Wrong Status Bar info" and turning off Bluetooth kinda helped with the WiFi issues (I have speeds three quarters down).

Cannot take any more chances.

Good luck to other Mac users.
