An update on my last message. I had been using leads to extend the cable length between the MacPro and the screens. I've moved the MacPro to a position where cable extensions are not required and the screens are working. I've had one time when the screen were still blank when awakening from sleep but they appeared, eventually. Not sure why these changes would make a difference and so any thoughts would be welcomed.

I am on a Mac Mini with an HP Multisync P221w as my primary monitor. I was having problems waking the Mac after the 10.10.3 update which was fixed with the supplemental update. Now I have random bits of noise several pixels high appearing in horizontal lines ranging from 5% to 100% of the width of the screen. The noise continues until I move some of the windows around on the screen forcing that portion of the screen to be re-drawn.

This happens infrequently, about once every few hours and seems to be isolated to parts of the screen which have been displaying the same information for a while. I take an open window and drag it over the offending area and the noise cleans up like I am using an big eraser. My guess is that video RAM is being corrupted.

I have a slightly different display issue since the upgrade...

I have a new i7 Macbook Pro 13", six weeks old. When at home, I usually keep the lid closed as it is connected to power and a Belkin Thunderbolt 2 dock as is my Dell UP3214Q Ultrasharp 4K LED Monitor. I wake it up from sleep by using the keyboard and this hasn't been a problem, even after the upgrade.

When I need to go out on the road, I eject any peripherals attached to the dock and put the Macbook to "sleep" preserving all the open apps.

Yesterday I went out for a meeting and couldn't start the laptop, or at least that was what I thought; perhaps the battery was flat? Having a closer look, I could see the keyboard light was activated when the lid opened, going off after the inactivity period. I assumed it had hung or something but being at a meeting couldn't start trouble shooting.

When I got home I connected it back up to the dock and it came up normally. Re-ran my usual "going on the road" process (eject, sleep) and was able to recreate the inbuilt display issue.

My workaround until Apple fix the is to shutdown before disconnecting the dock which is a real pain as I have to close all my open apps etc.

I might be experiencing the same problem as you guys. I have a mid-2010 iMac (21.5") which I've connected to a Sony LCD-TV (older HD Ready model) with a brand-name HDMI cable and Macally Mini Displayport to HDMI -adapter to create extended desktop. This combination has worked for years without a single problem. I updated to 10.10.3 a while ago and after that there was also a smaller update concerning a video driver bug or something. Anyway, even after these updates everything seemed to be working fine. Then, out of the blue, my iMac stopped detecting the Sony. I tried everything from checking the cables and connections, running Onyx automation, doing PRAM and SMC resets and running safe mode, but nothing worked: in no way does the iMac recognize the Sony LCD-TV.

I then ran into this thread and it became pretty clear that the fault is with the OS X 10.10.3 and the video driver. I sincerely hope this is going to get fixed. I do have Chromecast and I guess I could use it to stream the stuff I want to the Sony but it's not quite the same experience.

Just to elaborate on everything again - through discovery:

My Mac Pro is currently working fine running 10.10.1. No issues with DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort. I ran a time machine backup to be able to revert if for any reason an update went through without a fix. No adapters or cables will fix it. Save your money. The problem is purely from the OS X update.

Upgrading to 10.10.3 will break it.

Sorry to say this, but I am not optimistic that Apple will provide a fix. Do a search for video issues on this board, and you'll see that this is a recurring problem. This is a partial checklist of what I tried to get my 27in LG monitor to work with my 2009 27in Core 2 Duo iMac. This problem occurred when I upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.9 back in January. The things that I tried were:

1. Changed cables

2. Tried other connections (DVI, HDMI)

3. Reset PRAM

4. Reset SMC

5. Edited video kext

6. Searched for alternate drivers

7. Earlier OS versions (problem occurred with 10.8 onwards)

8. Different monitor (worked with lower resolution 24in NEC monitor)

Absolutely none of which worked, other than the lower resolution, smaller monitor. Interestingly enough, the LG monitor works with a 2009 vintage 24in iMac. But, that's not why I purchased the LG.

My conclusion is that Apple is discontinuing support for older hardware on a rolling basis with every OS update and upgrade, and there will be no fixes. This leaves us with either paying through the nose for a new computer, or sticking with an older OS until absolutely forced to update due to critical mission requirements for our businesses. I had to do this and purchased a new 27in iMac about 6 weeks ago.

As a small business owner, I have had to spend far too much time trying to make all of this this stuff work. It is incredibly awkward to try to get billable work done while finding that Apple is complicating my work life by doing such things as overwriting my Lexmark and HP printer drivers with updates that are nothing other than generic Postscript drivers, etc. As a Mac user personally and professionally since 1994, I am disappointed more than I can say.

FWIW,

So my options are 1) to wait for a possible fix in the next update, 2) revert back to an earlier version (I guess this would mean doing a clean install with the OS X Yosemite installer and then maybe updating to 10.10.2) or to just accept that I cannot use an external monitor (as an owner of a ChromeCast, I tried out Airparrot 2 but the mouse cursor is slow in the external screen and you cannot make the source screen go black). Obviously option 2 could be the best alternative, but a clean install (to avoid any problems) does require some work (I have a SuperDuper! clone as my backup) and I guess there's no guarantee that Apple will fix this issue in the next update. Also, I'd hate getting stuck with 10.10.2 for eternity (I'm not replacing this computer anytime soon).

Guys, I may have a possible solution although I couldn't get it to work. I wrote about this issue on another forum and one of the members of this forum suggested that I should use thin tape and cover pin 19 of the male HDMI connector that goes to my Sony LCD-TV. I tried it and did not do anything. However, on my first try, I accidentally covered pin 2 as I was holding the connector upside down. This made the iMac recognize the Sony LCD-TV although the Sony's screen stayed blank.

I don't know much about electronics but I'm sure someone might be able to figure out a solution based on this technique. Of course it's possible that covering the pins makes the iMac recognize external displays but does not bring back the actual picture.

My issue is different. Updating to 10.10.3 in my external monitor or in the LCD of the Macbook Pro (13-inch mid 2012) appears a flicker from time to time in a block of pixels in random places. Clicking in those places or moving a window the problem stops. Reseting PRAM, SMC, unpluging all, it doesn't solve the problem.

When I verify permissions I always see the above lines:

User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.

Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.

I tried a clean install of 10.10.3 and the problem not only remains when I plug in the external monitor but also when I work in Macbook alone. I also tried a hardware test but without any result.

Before updating everything worked perfectly.

Any suggestions?

I use an AMD Radeon HD 7xxx 3072 MB card with an early 2009 Mac Pro.

Before upgrading to 10.10.3, I could use an LG display over dual-link DVI with 2560x1440 and extending that with a Dell 24" display with 3840x2160@30Hz, but after upgrading the other day my secondary display would just enter power saving mode and not light up.

Switching off MST(i.e. disabling DisplayPort 1.2 support) in the monitor's settings, I'm now back to having video on the Dell, but it goes black now and then so I think Apple messed something up badly with 10.10.3.
