Google 2-step verification failing in 10.10.3 'Internet Accounts'

I'm trying to set up an existing Google account in OS X 'Internet Accounts'. I think the Google 2-step verification is newly supported for OS X via 'Internet Accounts' (rather than app specific) as of 10.10.3? I enter my Google password, and am then sent the 2-step verification code to my mobile. When I enter this I get a message 'Google Authentication failed' I am now unable to log in to my Gmail via Mail.

Thanks jtgreene!

This worked great with iCal for me. I did change the Step 6 select to "local items" (we don't have iCloud keychain allowed).

I was also able to modify the same process for gmail, and got it working in mail.app. The Step 2 commands that I used are as follows (there are two items to create, then copy, etc):

security add-internet-password -a youruser@yourdomain.com -s imap.gmail.com -r imap -P 993 -w yourapppassword

security add-internet-password -a youruser@yourdomain.com -s smtp.gmail.com -r smtp -P 587 -w yourapppassword

Then followed your keychain steps, and then manually add gmail.

So far so good.

This happened to me immediately after upgrading to 10.10.4. Mail would no longer send or receive emails. I generated a new 2-step app-specific password and used that in Mail, but it did not help. In the end it was RESOLVED as follows:

  1. Go to Settings, Accounts, select your account.
  2. Go to Advanced.
  3. Make sure "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" is checked. Mine was not. Once I checked it and restarted Mail, I was able to receive emails again.
  4. Go to Settings, Accounts, select your account.
  5. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) dropdown, select "Edit SMTP Server List...".
  6. Select your outbound mail server.
  7. Go to Advanced.
  8. Make sure "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" is checked. Mine was not. Once I checked it and restarted Mail, I was able to send emails again.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! This fixed it for me too. On 10.10.3 I had to disable "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" to fix slowness and console errors for Mail.app.

But since the 10.10.4 update this apparently resulted in Mail.app not being able to access my Gmail account anymore. Enabling this option again for both the IMAP server and the SMTP server entries in the Mail.app account preferences fixed the issue for me.

Much appreciated nbrewster!

We were getting fairly continuous failures on GoogleApps for EDU with an SSO program. I changed the automatic form post in the SSO program from a <script>... submit...</script> to a <body onload="...submit..."> and it works. Perhaps the OS/X 10.10.4 minibrowser does not like <script>?

This problem is so random though - I've seen accounts fail to work for several hours and then suddenly work - that it will take a while to determine if this fix really works. I have a large user community though, so I should know pretty quickly.

See my post at the end of this thread for the fix to the SSO program. Basically, <script>...</script> does not appear to be handled correctly in the mini-browser that pops up for SSO. I'm not sure why we had random failures for a while, culminating in total failure in 10.10.4. Perhaps <script> is not broken intentionally and was only failing sometimes? At any rate, I've had no failures since I made the change. I am systems programmer for a land grant university, so I have a fairly large user base, even though many are not here at the moment. BTW, Google+ is disabled site wide, and the Google+ API box is checked (see previous posts). However, we have always had that API enabled; perhaps there are multiple issues involved here.

Same here. I (or Apple Mail, that is) was not able to send emails via SMTP for Google accounts. Using System Preferences → Internet Accounts for re-entering passwords and enabling Google account permissions did not work at all, only resulting in vague error messages.

But checking the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" option in all Gmail SMTP server entries that were marked "(offline)" makes everything working again. Connection Doctor now has all indicators showing green status. 🙂

Nevertheless, Apple Mail is still far from perfect, e.g. crashing at least once each day.

All, Having turned two step off and on for several reasons.

I typically like to have it ON.

Like most of you I have had challenges getting it fully functional. If it is off all my apps work fine and sync properly.

I do not have and 'Admin account" as Im a "single personal user"

My current work around is.

set up the google account from the preferences panel. and just accept the error messages.

Mine leaves me with just messages working. Nothing else.

Then I manually setup Gmail using the "Other" option. Works fine.

then when I go back into preferences I see the mail and messages boxes checked.

I have not found away to get my Notes working yet. If I check the box it "checks" then one second later the check disappears.

Anyone with knowledge of how to get Notes working too and or how to set up this so called ADMIn account?

TIA

Sam

I didn't have access to google apps as I wasn't using them at all.

The fix that I found was to remove the google account from internet accounts on os x (10.10.5) then go to Google > Account Settings > Connected Apps and Sites

From there, I removed OS X's access and then re-authenticated through internet accounts.

seems to be working now. Hope that helps someone.

This is how I fixed the issue. Similar to Cheri Moe's post, but a bit shorter:

  1. Turn off 2FA
  2. Open Mail, select Preferences>Accounts>Select your Google Account
  3. Go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and from the pull-down menu, select Edit SMTP Server List
  4. Select your gmail account in the Server list then click on the Advanced tab
  5. Enter account password
  6. Click Save or Apply when Prompted
