I can't add a new Google account in Yosemite 10.3.3

I am trying to add a Google account via Internet Accounts in System Preferences, but all I get is this window spinning forever and ever. Have tried many times.

Have also tried via Mail but same problem. I understand 10.3.3 supports 2 step verification for Google but I can't get that far.

Any suggestions?

Update:

1.) I tried creating a new user on my mac and got the exact same problem.

2.) I turned on two-factor authentication for my Google account but still have the problem.

So, no good news here.

Since nothing changed on my computer on Monday morning when this started happening, I suspect that something changed on the Google side.

After you turned on two factor authentication, did you use the new code rather than the password?

In the mean time, until you can get Gmail working you can try these options;

1) Download the demo for Postbox. http://www.postbox-inc.com/

If you can't get your Gmail account setup in Postbox, this indicates an issue with Gmail rather than Mail.

2) You might like MailTabPro for Gmail $1.99. In Mac App Store (MAS). Nothing to download and easy access to your messages.

So, per the original poster, I don't even get the chance to enter any password because the "Add Account" dialog box freezes with the "Fail Wheel" after you click on the Google account option in the right-hand pane. (I was just experimenting to see if the two-factor auth changed the interface on the google side in any way.)

I.e, it isn't related to setting up GMail with Mail in particular, it is about setting up your Google account for anything.

Open Keychain Access in Applications/Utilities.

Find your Gmail entries by entering gmail in the top right filter box.

Delete all entries. The keychain is bad about keeping old entries when you add new passwords.

Next under Keychain Access in the Menu bar select Keychain First Aid. Enter password and select Repair.

Open Mail and enter your Gmail password in both the incoming window under Accounts under Account Information tab and again in Edit SMTP settings. Under the Advanced tab.

Success! I found a work-around for this problem.

I booted into Safe Mode, then logged into my user account, and then I was able to successfully add my Google Account in the Systems Preferences>Internet Accounts panel. It prompted me for my username and password and then asked for verification via two-factor authentication (since I had recently turned that on while trying to diagnose this issue). Everything worked and my Google account was connected.

I then rebooted to normal mode and the account is still connected. So far so good.

Good luck.

I kept getting told that there was no preferred server for both my Hotmail and Gmail accounts. I deleted both and when I tried to set them up again using the option provided by Apple Mail, I got an "unknown error occurred" message.

I used the basic "Add another account" option, entered the email address and password, restarted Mail and it works just fine now.

I am also unable to add my new Gmail account to my Internet Accounts, which I want to do so that I can run Gmail through Apple Mail. When I try to add Gmail to Internet Accounts, I get this message:

"Connection Insecure. Failed to verify the server certificate. This could be because of your network configuration or your proxy settings."

I have no idea what this means. I have tried to do this in regular startup and in Safe Mode, with no success.

However, if I log in as a new User, I have no trouble adding Gmail as an Internet Account (being a new User, there are no other Internet Accounts). This tells me the problem is not with Google, but with Mac. Why can I not set up my Gmail as an Internet Account when I log in as the usual User?

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Hello,

This happened after I changed my password in Google accounts (I do not have 2 factor activated) and in Apple ID.

I have a Mac mini running El Capitan 10.11.3.

Whenever I try to add my Google account vie the Internet Accounts in System Preferences, in the last step when I select the apps I want to use and click in "Done" just nothing happens and the window stays there:

Does this happen to anyone? I cannot use my emails of Google if is not via webmail.... It is weird because before I changed my password it was working find.

Thanks!
