Does the new Photo App replace my IPhoto Library?

I just did an update to Yosemite 10.10.3. With it is a new Photos App. I read some time back that something new would replace IPhoto. Is this it?

I noticed when the update finished downloading my IPhots app was removed from the dock and replaced with Photos. I got as far as this screen, shown below.

I thought you choose one of the four displayed but I guess you have to perform at least one of those. My question is, should I import my IPhotos Library to Photos? If so, I will then have two big photos libraries with over 15,000 photos each. So do I then delete the iPhoto Library? I am surprised Apple did not give a little more direction on this.

You do not need to migrate to photos if you do not want to, at least, if you have a compatible Iphto version.

If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 installed, just launch iPhoto and continue working with iPhoto. If you have an earlier version of iPhoto 9. try to update from the updates tab of the AppStore. Updating does not work well right now, the update is not always available, but try it, till you are lucky.

Photos is the new main Photos.app, but iPhoto 9.6.1 works well with Yosemite and you vcan still use it. Only, apple will no longer develop it further and not sell it any longer.

If you decide to migrate your iPhoto Library, Photos will create a migrated version. Your iPhoto Library will be renamed to "migrated...", but you can still use it. Both libraries will have about the same size, but will not require additional storage for the second library, since the photos library will use links to the original library, the media files will be shared.

So you do not need to delete the iPhoto Library- keep i, until you know, which version you want to use, and have tested everything thoroughly.

But how recently? See for example this MacRumors article, which states that about a day after Photos for OS X was released, Apple pulled iPhoto from the Mac App Store. Several other sites are reporting the same thing, for instance Apple Insider.

On no, rumour sites incorrect.

How about

OK, but how about the screen shot I posted or the many reports from users seeing the same thing? There is more to it than just unhiding purchases or dragging an older installed version to the trash.

I'm not sure why some can get this to work & others can't, but I think it may have something to do with whether or not iPhoto 9.x was actually purchased from the MAS or originally came installed on a Mac.

Unless you manually deleted it, the old iPhoto app is still there in your Applications folder.

Read the thread. This refers to folks who's iPhoto won't launch on 10.10.3

Specifically, you must have iPhoto version 9.6.1 installed if you are running OS X version 10.10.3. If you have any older version of iPhoto installed, OS X 10.10.3 will refuse to launch it.

No, seriously?

(I may have missed something - not sure if that's surprise or wit!)

Yes - I just updated a system to 10.10.3 which had iPhoto 9.6 (had been on beta, and have been away for a few days).

On restart:

There were a few other things I had to do to get 9.6.1 to install:

Well lots of other folks have reported success with it. I'd suggest contacting Store support.

This may affect some other users with other drives, and/or copies of existing iPhoto app on data drives like me.

In essence, I moved existing incompatible iPhoto (having already copied it to an external and internal drive for posterity) to another drive and compressed it to hide it from MAS. Trashing it may well suffice, but as I wanted to move it I didn't trash it. If people do trash it, they might need to empty trash as well?

Thereafter I logged out of the user account, logged back in, ejected all other non-starup drives as several have MAS apps or backups.

Next, I re-opened the App Store, and I had the option to Install which was only Update (non-functional) beforehand.

Successfully downloaded 9.6.1 in release version of 10.10.3 having been unable to open 9.6:

Terence, please understand that I am not posting for your benefit alone, or just for you & anyone you choose to reply to. If that is how you want to do it, I have no problems with that, but since a lot of other people may read these discussions, if I think something could benefit some of them, even if it is just a clarification of something you think should be obvious, I am likely to add a comment about that.

the reason it says item not available is because you still have it in the computer, just take the iPhoto app from within you application folder and put it in the trash, then go back to the app store and look in purchases, now it will show iPhoto and the button should say "download", instead of "open" as it did before

you deleted the app. Once it is downloaded you will be able to open it and put it back in the dock if you choose.
