iOS 8.3 fixed nothing for me. Every morning I wake, turn on my iPhone 6 and the wifi is disconnected. It shows connected but refuses to access the Internet. After 7 months of this issue I am losing patience.

Update : when on the apple.com Support section, asked for a chat and found I wasn't eligible so asked for an exception and there's an option there for issues related to iOS 8.x updates. After a nice chat with an Apple agent, we're heading for a hardware repair.

Just guessing at this point - could be a combination of software & a specific wifi chip used on some models and not others... ?

I just want to report (for what it's worth) that I have the same problem: after updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 8.3 my wifi is very unpredictable and mostly not working. Apple should support us on this issue. Buying a new phone is not one of the solutions for me. Apple, if you fail to support your older models, I WILL NOT buy another iPhone in the future.

I have an iPhone 4S bought in November 2015. I recently upgraded to IOS 8.4 and it seemed to be working fine.

When I woke up on Sunday 12 July 2015, I discovered that the wifi button, in settings, was greyed out and so I cannot connect to any wifi networks.

I have tried resetting the phone and restoring the phone to factory settings - neither of which worked

I plan to visit my local Apple Store in the next couple of days to seek advice.

All I can find online are suggestions to heat up the device and/or put it in the freezer - neither of which sound very sensible to me.

Can anyone help? Any advice or solutions would be gratefully received.

I was also wondering if this is related to IOS 8 or if it's a hardware issue - again any thoughts would be gratefully received.

My understanding from what I've read and been told by support is that the software update may be the catalyst but that it is ultimately a hardware issue and therefor any software approach will not effect anything. We all know that if its a hardware issue it will cost $, I think that is what motivates people to keep trying software based approaches but I have not heard of any success. My understanding is that the update causes the phone to run so hot that the solder around the wifi chip to melt.

The price for lightly used Iphone 4s is so cheap that I am debating getting a new iphone 4s pre wifi issue and setting it up with an older IOS. Assuming I will have that selection from factory mode.

The hair dryer and freezer trick now only works until the phone warns up again now. My iPhone 4S is niw useless. I've now given up on the money grabbing exploits of Apple after 5 years and have bought an LG G3 at half the price. I wish I'd done this eaelier. I've got absolutely no confidence in Apples quality anymore. Now I have a phone which lets me take control. Goodbye Apple. This feels good...

I too, just downloaded ios 8.4 and have had numerous glitches since doing it on my iphone 4. My main problem was I was unable to turn the wifi on. I noticed this after I started getting alerts from Verizon that my data was all used up, way before the end of a cycle. This all started after this download. My calendar wasn't functioning properly and my battery drains overnight. Visits to the genius bar, apple tech support, Verizon tech support, etc. Apple tech saying that it is a hardware issue, that miraculously started right after I downloaded ios 8.4. I followed Apple tech's directions to backup data to computer, restore iphone to original state after restoring from backup didn't fix the problem. I tried the freezer thing last night and it worked for the time being. Battery stills drains very rapidly and now have a beep. It happens frequently and does not signal a text message or anything. The screen remains black Just got off the phone with Apple tech and they said after looking at my data that it is hardware issue. They have not seen this issue with enough frequency to say it is their problem. I was told my only option was for them to repair it for $199 or get a new phone. They don't care.

If the views is the number of people that have this problem, then::

WE need Julia Roberts, who played Erin Brockovich to look into this matter.

Having just read a report that ios9 reverts back to ios7 WiFi protocols and fixes the fried WiFi issue I thought I'd try updating to ios9.

Was it worth it...err....No! Just wasted another 4 hours of my life I won't get back thanks to this money grabbing company. I'll stick to my Android LG G3 which has worked seamlessly now for months.

I really don't understand why anyone bothers with Apple's locked in empire and poor customer attitude. Clearly a very large number of people have been affected by this issue which I have read doesn't just affect iPhone4(S). The least Apple could have done is owned up to the problem and offered everyone affected a free replacement regardless of the guarantee. We haven't all got the money to update our phone every year and this fault is not caused by the customer. Where are the morals?

I'm expecting Apple to disappear over the next few years as they get left behind by their competitors....and personally I'd be glad to see the back of them!

This is a software problem ...I just upgraded to IOS 9 on a iPhone 4S ...the WiFi button refused to turn on. I rebooted and then WiFi appeared again...then General button booted out. So...software problem. I tried General/Rest/Reset Network a couple of times then tried again with Cellular data turned off...Amazing Wifi came back worked perfectly. Turned on Cellular data about 20 minutes late and blow me Wifi prayed out and locked up. So not a WiFi chip error its a software bug conflict.

An update on my last post here. As a last resort (having already updated from ios8 to ios9) I tried the hair dryer/freezer trick and then reset the network settings and phone. 1 week later so far the WiFi is still working. Of course it may have just needed a reset after updating to ios9, who knows?

It's good it seems to be working again but I won't be relying on it.
