Photos: Can't Drag & Drop to Browser

Well, that' pretty much says it. In the new Yosemite Photos I can drag & drop pictures inside the OS, but they won't drag and drop to a web browser (safari, chrome, or firefox). I do this pretty frequently (gmail, facebook messages, wordpress). Thought I would put this out there in the world, don't really expect anyone to have a fix 😟

To the posters talking about the Media Browser, c'mon! If you have a photo library of any size, it is all but useless. Wait for it to load, try and find the photos you want, finally get them. That is not a solution.

Two Macs. 58k photos in the Library. No load times on either. As fast as searching in the app itself. That is a solution.

I've upgraded to Photoshop CS6. On a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) with 25K photos in the Library, it's 18 seconds to bring up the Photos library in the Media Browser from Photoshop's "Open" dialog.

There are a lot of absolutes in this thread. I'd say the only absolute is "your results may vary." And these suggestions are still all workarounds for the lack of drag-and-drop functionality in Photos that exists in all of the other Apple-built OS X base applications.

Dude. You can't search for photos when apple hides both the original files and the names from you, and especially when the file names are obtuse. I migrated a library with more than 20,000 photos in it. They aren't searchable.

Dude. It's a database, and a database is like a sewer, what you get out of it depends entirely on what you put into it. In the media growers you can search visually - via thumbnails, just like the app. You can search on filenames, just like the app, you can search on keywords, just like the app. You can see all your Moments/Albums and whatever, just like the app.

Dude.

But you can. However, since Photos is only Version 1.0, there's some workarounds we have to do to be able to do that.

1 - get the file names to show below each thumbnail like in iPhoto as follows:

a - set the title to be viewed in the File ➙ Metadata menu option:

User uploaded file

b - use this Applescript to copy the file names to the title field for each image: Script: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename w/Extension

When that's done you can do a text search for file names, partial file names, etc. just like you did with iPhoto. You can also use Smart albums for searching for specific images that have some commonality.

Remember that Photos is a work in progress and we must keep after Apple to restore those features we've become dependent on in iPhoto that are missing from Photos.

+1. It is ridiculous that Apple has removed the ability to drag and drop photos directly from Photos. The media browser is so slow and horrible, it is hardly a "workaround." The only real workaround is to drag the photos to your desktop first, then drag and drop them into the application you want to use them in. But even this workaround is terrible when you want to directly edit a photo in Photoshop as we could do with iPhoto.

And yes, Terence Devlin, I've already submitted my complaint directly to Apple, no need for one of your snarky replies.

At the risk of sounding snarky I have to say you don't seen to understand that with the new architecture of Yosemite and Photos it's the 3rd party developers responsibility to provide the extension for their product in order to integrate with Yosemite and Photos. Also they have had access to the beta versions as long as we have in order to create those extensions.

So if you don't like the new Photos continue using iPhoto. Photo was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock. If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library. If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x try following these instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

So, maybe Apple could fix Safari then? Drag and Drop functionality doesn't work with it either.

Drag from where to where?

I can drag photos from a Safari window into a Pages, Keynote, Numbers or TextEdit window. I've not heard of any 3rd party apps that have upgraded to that as yes. However, there are some that can access photos in a Photos library via the Media browser via the Open window.l
