How can I view my photos in "Events" like in iPhoto? How can I create events? I have 55,000 photos and 1700 events so the only way I can possibly manage my photos is using events that are one slide in size.

I have 55,000 images organized into about 1700 events. The only reasonable way to view my library is using events in iPhoto where each event has one image That still leaves 1700 images to sort through but that is a lot easier than 55,000 images. In the side bar is a folder with "iPhoto Events" but those views still show all of the slides. How can I create events and view my photos as events as in iPhoto? Events are critical for large libraries and has been my primary way to sort images.

Thanks!

If you delete it in an Album only the pointer is gone and the original photo is somewhere in your 50,000 photos and you don't know where.

You can use the search tool to find just about anything in Photos if you know its approximate date, part of its filename or title, or any keyword(s) assigned to it.

So one workaround for the delete issue is instead of trying to delete any photo from an album, create a unique keyword, maybe something like "to_delete," & assign it to those photos as you come across them. Then you can do a search for that keyword, do a select all, & delete them using the Image menu item or the delete key. This approach also could be modified to create one or two other unique keywords for something like "delete_next_Jan" or whatever your imagination can dream up that makes sense for your needs.

Of course, sort of like iPhoto's trash safety net, that doesn't actually immediately delete the items. They will be deleted after a month or so automatically, or if that isn't good enough, you can use the File menu's "Show Recently Deleted" item to show them & click on the "Delete All" button in that view.

If this isn't acceptable, you probably should start looking for a different app for your photo management needs now, because it isn't very likely Apple is going to bring back events.

When you have over 50,000 photos that are already labelled and with keywords going back to create unique keywords or trying to search by date or name is not very feasible. I should not have 100's of hours of organizational work made useless because Apple wants to make a desktop/laptop photo program look like its iPhone sibling. From what I can see there are some really tedious and insufficient work arounds for what have been common practice in iPhoto for many years. It is sort of like if Ford changed the accelerator from the right foot to the left foot of their cares for no apparent reason. I do plan on giving feedback for Apple to not stoop to the lowest common denominator in Photos and restore some of its basic features (geotagging and events). Hopefully, they will listen to their long time Mac customers.

"I don't understand. Why can't you do that with albums or with albums & folders? That's what they are intended for."

Because there are 55,000 of them. Because deleting a image in an Album does not delete the image. This is about easily handling the actual pictures. I don't know about you but I can't remember dates as easily as I can remember events/names

"For example, switch to the Moments view (⌘1 & if necessary on the right arrow button at the top to cycle to Moments from the Year or Collections view). Select whatever pictures you want in that view, then click the + button at the top of the window & select the add to album option from the popup. In the dialog box that pops up you can create a new album with any name you want or add them to an existing one. You can also filter items using the search box at the top, for instance by entering "January 2012" to see all items with that date range. Do a 'select all' or select just the ones you want in the album & then use the + button. (You can also use ⌘N instead of the + button, or select New Album from the File menu if you want.)"

1) Moments is cumbersome. Too many images not enough space on my 27" even at the smallest size.

2) It would be fine if I could move the pictures around and separate them within moments but it does not permit me. I have pictures of client 1 mixed in with client 2 mixed with birthday pictures

3) Albums do not allow me to work on my pictures. If I delete a picture in an album it does not delete the picture it deletes the thumbnail. I cannot merge 2 Albums. I don't know why. If I grab an image from an Album it only grabs the thumbnail. It will not copy the original size. I cannot drag and drop from an album the original Picture to the desktop or a USB.

4) How do I search for Jen's first Birthday? Or insurance claim when I don't remember the date? I have 30 years of pictures. I may remember the details from this or last years Christmas but the year when my kids filled beach balls with water and were struggling to get them out of the pool? It's easy with iPhoto impossible with Photos. You have to jump from albums to the dates in order to work with the original sizes.

"Granted, that might take some time with very large collections, but you should already have a lot of albums in the iPhoto Events folder."

Photos view is not an option if the only sort is by date and I can't rename it. We are talking over 50,000 pictures. It's almost useless. Some time? Scaned pictures are dated the day they were scanned......

You can then just use the various Photos (⌘1) views when you want to see things organized that way & the various album (⌘2) views when you want to see them grouped that way. Note that in the top level Albums view (the one that shows all the folders & any albums not in folders) you can drag anything in the "My Albums" section to reorder them as you like -- just don't choose the View > Keep Sorted by Date option after you do that or it will undo your new sort order!

Again I will reiterate that the view by date which is the default is useless when you have a lot of pictures. Albums are useless for drag and drop or copy and paste because it just copies a thumbnail and not the original.

I normally use albums for a subset of the pictures I take. I can have multiple albums with copies of the same image for different purposes. I am aware about albums and working within albums does not fix the problem. Albums also has a limitation when exporting/publishing when there are more than 99 photos in the album. Photos brought us back 10 years. It feels like we changed the name removed events and added cloud.

One last time albums does not fix the problem.

You are right. It means don't invest in proprietary solutions that tie you into an unresponsive company. I used to save all the pictures in folders and used finder to manage them. iPhoto and events convinced me there was a better way. I was wrong. The best software to manage your photos is finder. You will have more functionality. You can sort by name, date and tag. Then you can use any program to refine the management. You can also move it to Windows, Linux or any other OS without losing any details.

My mistake.

"If I grab an image from an Album it only grabs the thumbnail."

I used Albums as my iPhoto organisation - easy and effective. I then used my photos to make family event DVDs or photobooks (not with Apple).

Does this thumbnail comment mean that I will be drag-and-dropping lowly sized thumbnails from Photos Albums into iMovie?

And does it mean that when I want to make a photobook I will need to scroll back through a multitude of photos rather than just uploading from an Album?

Apr 16, 2015 1:36 AM in response to Whatswrongwithapple

Albums are useless for drag and drop or copy and paste because it just copies a thumbnail and not the original.

On my system, drag & drop copies full sized photos if I drag onto a folder displayed in Finder views or onto the desktop. It uses the edited photo if there is one; the original if there is not. JPEG images may be recompressed, but the image still full sized. All metadata is preserved, embedded in the file, including anything added in Photos.

To avoid recompression & to use the original even if there is an edited version, I hold down the option key while dragging. That copies an exact duplicate. Like with iPhoto, that includes only any metadata embedded in the original.

I have events which consist of old pictures scanned in last year and they are displayed out of order. Their creation date is the date that they were scanned and not the date that they were taken. How do I change the creation date on thousands of photos?

To change creation dates on multiple photos (e.g. scanned ones), select the group of photos that you wish to change, Image > Adjust Date and Time...

This will batch change the dates on the photos you selected. E.g. if you change the year, just the year will be shifted, and the relative times (the order they were scanned) will remain the same as before.

i feel all of your pain - have spent many many hours organizing my iphoto and it was all taken away with no warning . . . photos ***** and yosemite has ruined my entire computer and because i knew nothing of this risk, i upgraded to yosemite (because i wanted family sharing for my boys) and iPhoto disappeared and i can't even use it if i want to . . .

unbelievable to me that they could take HOURS of time i have spent on software that I BOUGHT and move it into a terribly inefficient and slow program that now costs me $50 per year . . .

shocked that there is not more outrage here . . . . truly

can i still use shutterfly to upload these photos? most of photos were not from mobile devices but from cameras that may or may not have had the correct date stamp . . . moments DOES NOTHING FOR ME

have spent 4 days on this . . . . Photos crashes nearly every time i want to do something . . . have complained to apple twice . . . now would love some input on another photo management site . . .

High there from Sweden!

Photos is the **** of a sh... and i hope that Apple follows our complains. I made the same experience and even more awful findings: hidden is not hidden, no geo-tagging, no order from taken etc.

The good news is: iPhotos isn't away, still under applications but no longer on dock. And you should have two photo libraries under pictures, the old iPhoto one and the new and rotten Photos one! Just delete three new library and replace Photos by iPhoto on dock!

Apr 16, 2015 7:56 AM in response to Hanns-Ulrich

unfortunately for some, if iPhone had not been updated than the yosemite upgrade deleted the option entirely . . . i have been told that this was not intended but it happened to many of us and so i am dealing with all of the disgust of Photos with zero option of going back to my VERY CAREFULLY and time consuming project of organizing a life time of family pictures . . . livid

You can update iPhoto from the app store.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
