How do I get iTunes to recognize all songs in music folder?

My wife has had an iPod for years. I recently purchased my own. To get my music collection started, I hooked it up to her computer and it synced all her songs from iTunes to my iPod. Then I hooked my iPod up to my computer and all the songs were transferred from my iPod to my iTunes. From there, I deleted the songs I didn't like and added many more of my own. (It just so happened that there was already a backup of my wife's songs on my computer - think this may be contributing to my problem)
Then I recently moved my library to a different hard drive. The next time I syned my iPod, it said that there were over 500 songs that could not be found. The only way to get the songs to show up is to manually go into my wife's backup folder on my computer, copy the song to my music folder, and then either 1)double click the song in windows explorer, which starts it playing in iTunes and adds it to the iTunes library, but then I have to delete the identical song in iTunes that won't play, or 2) try to play the song in iTunes and manually direct it to the location of the song. I have accepted the fact that I will have to manually move all the songs from my wife's backup to my music folder, but isn't there a way to get iTunes to go through my music folder and recognize all the songs without having to play each one?

Thanks for the help. I tried that, and it does work. Cool trick!
However... it leaves me in the same situation I was in originally. It appears that when I drag the song on top of the iTunes window, it links it up with the song that is in my wife's backup instead of actually moving the song into MY music folder. It would be a good short term solution, but could cause problems again in the future if I need to move my music folder or her music folder. (I'm guessing that is what happened when I first connected my iPod to my computer. It saw some songs in my wife's backup music folder, so it didn't make another copy in my folder. It only copied the ones that weren't already somewhere on my computer)
Is there a way to actually copy the file to my folder AND have iTunes recognize it?

Yep I can help you fix that one too! First you are going to want to delete all those songs from your library that you just added. Highlight them all, then hit delete on the Keyboard. Now here's the IMPORTANT PART: When iTunes asks you what to do with the files:

" Do you want to move the selected songs to the Trash, or keep them in the iTunes Music folder?"

Select Keep Files. The other choice will erase them off your wife's computer.

Now let's change the way iTunes handles files.

Open up iTunes Preferences:
1) Preferences > Advanced > General (TAB)
2) Click on " Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to folder=
3) Click OK
4) Now, re-add all those songs back into your library by doing the drag again. What this will do this time is make a COPY of the original songs and add them into YOUR music folder.

WIll that work for ya?
