How to delete pictures permanently from Photos app in my entire mac?

Within the Photos app for OS X you cannot delete a picture permanently from your Mac.

(I have imported my existing iPhoto library when I migrated to Photos on 10.10.3)

When I delete a picture from Photos. Photos then puts the picture in a trash bin that is hidden in the File button on the task bar - "Show Recently Deleted". When you select this it then shows all of your deleted pictures you selected in Photos. If you then select to "Delete All" it asks you again are your sure and you click ok. Photos then cannot see these photos. BUT IT DID NOT DELETE THEM FROM YOUR MAC!

I then opened iPhoto, found the photos that I deleted inside the Photos app and viola they are still there, (these are not thumbnails!) these are the exact picture. HOW DO YOU VERIFY? In iPhoto if you select the picture then go to File - "Reveal in Finder" it will show that the picture you THOUGHT you deleted in Photos, is still there in the Master folder in your library!!

FYI there is no way in Photos to find the file location, very sneaky because the app is not deleting these files. This very frustrating coming from Apple who is pushing thinner profiles so SSD's with very limited storage, to give you the assumption that you are actually deleting these photos and videos when in fact you are not.

Question again is...

How to delete pictures permanently from Photos app in my entire Mac?

Does anyone have a solution other than don't use Photos.

This question was asked and solved already but I have verified that "Delete All" in the hidden trash can in Photos does in fact not delete from your disk space! Have a video on my YouTube Channel iTJMacattack that shows this issue - for proof.

Please real help and a solution!!

Thanks,

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

That depends on what you are calling the source folder - when you hold down the command key and press the delete key with a managed library the photos is moved to the recently deleted and in thirty days or when you delete it prior to that it will be gone from the Photos library - if you have a referenced library or had duplicates outside of Photos they are never touched - Photos only manages wiles within the Photos library and you must manage any that are outside the Photos library

What ever - iPhoto has never "lost" an original that I have seen but many, many, many users with referenced libraries have and of course users making major user errors like running CleanMyMac or other Malwear have lost photos due to their own actions - and with Photos you simply do not have the proper tools to manage referenced libraries in Photos so should not use them -- Disadvantages of a Referenced Library in Photos

And as to organization within the library that is clearly not an issue with either Photos or iPhoto since they totally replace the finder for their photos and you never have any need to directly access the photos withibn the library - there are no user servicable parts within the libraries. If you want to directly access your photos then you certainly should not be using Photos or iPhoto as that does not work with either program

As to what program you use that is totally a personal choice and makes no difference to anyone here - we are happy to help you with Photos and if you choose to use something else enjoy - Photos certainly is less capable than professional (and very expensive) programs like LightRoom and Aperture - but they have no system integration like Photos - Most users find that Photos is more than adequate for their needs if they learn it and use it properly and for the very few things it can not handle with extensions you can cover them and usually still be spending less money that a professional program

Correct but you are storing up many future problems if you use a referenced library

Referenced libraries are not well supported and are unnecessary - and if you choose to use a referenced library you will have problems - if that is what you want you should choose a different program that supports them

see Disadvantages of a Referenced Library in Photos for more information

Hi LN, thanks for your answer.

Let me explain what happens. I have made a test, a folder contains some photos which is imported into albums in photos application of mac. The thing is when i delete some of the photos already imported into photos application (from the album), they still remains in the folder. This is my question was if there is a way when deleting from Photos app also to delete from the folder. I wonder why there is no such a way.

thanks.

Before you delete a photos from the album with ⌘⌫, use the command "File > Show Referenced File in Finder" to show the original outside the Photos Library. then you can move it easily to the system trash, after deleting it from Photos.

Apple does not say "Why" in the documentation, but if your Photos library is a migrated iPhoto or Aperture library, the same photos outside the library may be used by other applications, and Photos has no way of knowing, how many other applications are referencing the photos. For a few years Apple supported to import iPhoto Libraries to Aperture by referencing the photos directly in the iPhoto Library package, and if you migrate successfully a library to Photos, deleting referenced originals might delete managed photos from other library packages. So Photos does not remove referenced original image files and it is up to user to delete them.

And did you import the photos in iPhoto as referenced or managed? Did iPhoto create copies in the iPhoto Library or not?

You can check this with a smart album (File > New Smart album). Set the rule for the album to "Photo is referenced". If this album is empty, all photos you are seeing in Photos are stored only in the Photos Library. There is then no connection to any image file duplicates you are seeing in folders outside the Photos Library. But if this smart album is not empty, the photos in this album are only stored outside your Photos library and the command "File > Show Referenced File in Finder" will show you, where the original files are.

I have the exact same trouble:

- with delete only, the photo will be deleted from an album but not from the app and not moved to trash

- with cmd + delete, the photo will be placed in "recently deleted"

- if we delete the photo from the "recently deleted" album, it won't be deleted from the mac.

Maybe it's because the photos are stored outside the Library? But does anyone has a solution to that?

Thanks :/

Yes, if you are storing the photos outside the library, Photos will not delete them, because they may be shared with other applications.

if you want to delete photos that are stored outside the library, use the command "File > Shoew referenced file in Finder" to reveal the original file, before you delete it from Photos. Afterward move the revealed file to the Trash on your Desktop.

That is one of the reasons, why a referenced library with storing the originals outside the Photos Library is not recommended. It is easy to make mistakes when deleting the photos manually.
