iMac 5K crashes when selecting large jpegs

I have a new iMac 5k, and I've noticed a very troubling issue. It's hard to figure out where it is coming from or what is causing it, so I'm hoping there'll be someone who has been through this before and knows what to do.

I export images from Lightroom or Capture One, simple full size jpegs at 100%, with metadata to my desktop or other folders. If the image is over a certain size, and I click on an individual image, within a second the entire computer has crashed and is restarting. If I select several of the images, everything is fine, it's when I click on one. I don't click to open the image, just select it. I've imported RAW images without issue, selected them, previewed them with no problems at all. Only exported images.

As a test, I've transferred the jpegs that crash the iMac to my laptop (by selecting multiple and moving via airdrop) and open them without any issue, so I don't think it's Lightroom or Capture One. I'm trying to figure out if this is a software or hardware issue. I think it might be a corrupted file somewhere that reads the metadata and previews the image with a thumbnail, but haven't found anything useful googling yet.

Any ideas? I'm happy to provide whatever info/screenshots about the issue to help.

I have the samen problem with my 5K late 2013 iMac 27'' with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M. I have the problem while previewing the images in the Finder. I have no problem with viewing the large images in the Photos app. Before the 10.10.3 update I had no problems. Hope Apple will fix this problem soon.

Interesting to note that the problem does not occur with large CR2 (raw) images, but only with large JPG images.

Just googled this. I'm glad I'm not the only one. All of my large files either crash the iMac 5K or are displayed as a grey window. I got the 5K specifically for my photography work and I can't currently use it for it!

I do hope Apple is on this because calling them it's as if they've not heard of the issue and the Apple store peeps also play the same game.

We can only hope for a quick fix.

yesterday, I had updated finial package. But Apple seems never solve this issue.

When I repair disk permission, I found displaypolicyd is strange.

And "HWJPEG not available on this platform" is main root cause.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6624349

1 - Create a shell script example: fixesPermissions.sh

sudo chown -R root /private/var/db/displaypolicyd && sudo chgrp -R wheel /private/var/db/displaypolicyd

2 - Path in my case

/etc

3 - Allow my user to run the script without root password

sudo nano /etc/sudoers

below the line

# Samples

# %users ALL=/sbin/mount /cdrom,/sbin/umount /cdrom

# %users localhost=/sbin/shutdown -h now

add line

myuser ALL=NOPASSWD: /etc/fixesPermissions.sh

key cmd + x

key y

key cmd + m

4 - Run the shell script when my user logs (Modify)

sudo vi /etc/fixesPermissions.sh
add "defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook"

- Jerry
