Sound Keeps cutting out, and it gets weirder

Ok this is weird. But my Mac Pro has been solid since I got it. I've been using computers for nearly 25 years now, and I've never seen memory affect sound, but here goes.

I installled 2gb of new memory ... Kingston Fully buffered 1gb chips, reviews all said work great with mac pro. I am using a Motu 828 Mk II. Well since the new memory, my sound keeps cutting off every once in a while. The computer still recognizes the Motu as the sound device (through firewire), but no sound, and I have to reboot to get it back.

Has anyone had experience with the Motu (which didn't do this for the entire first month until memory) cutting out on the mac pro after a while, or does anyone know of a problem with sound cutting out on Mac Pros? Memory causing sound to stop (extremely weird)?

Thanks

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

"ugh? another workaround?"

"you think you're too cool for school, don't you?

but I have a newsflash for you Walter Cronkite... you aren't..."

And this furthers the discussion how? The problem is the point, not taking pot shots at complete strangers. Motu is where this energy should be directed, not some tiny spec in the wind out of gods ***! And yes, I am slamming myself here.

Encouraging news that the problem appears to be with Apple FW implementation on the MacPro. And that a driver fix is possible. Hurrah for all the Metric Halo users... but for the vast majority of MOTU users on this thread.. we are still stuck.

I did eventually get into unicornation and there are some interesting threads on this subject, but they all insist that rebooting solves it (not so for us) and that SMC reset works as well (not so)

I don't know about you, but I am tired of not being able to use my 828! I am gonna get back on the horn to MOTU about this and see what the progress is on the new Intel driver.

Of note, Developers are finalizing the bug fixes for 10.4.9 so perhaps we all may get lucky and this may get fixed with the next OS update... then all we will have to contend with is, whether it will be safe to upgrade to Leopard.

Will anyone else joing me in calling MOTU this week?

Jon - while I applaud your efforts and dedication, I for one have more than tired of the constant struggle and am spending my tiny bits of free time searching for an alternative vendor / product, not on the phone with one which (aside from having horrendous support from the company) shows no promise of working properly in the near future. I guess you could say I've thrown in the towel, as much as I had nothing but praise for MOTU in the past, they really dropped the ball in my eyes, of late.

I did kind of throw in the towel, too because I had to do lots of mixing work last weeks and my clients were not pleased about these cutouts every now and then.
So I went out and bought an Apogee ensemble and guess what... It sounds fantastic and does not cut out BUT I have strange clicks and dropouts when changing the volume or starting applications. Its a little bit less annoying but looks not very professional to my clients either.
It seems that many Firewire interfaces have trouble with new Macs.
Motu and MetricHalo (did) cut out, Apogee clicks and pops, Fireface400, Presonus and TC do not work properly BusPowered, etc.
The M-Audio 410 is running... but this thing destroyed the firewire ports of two of my friends iBooks.
And Digidesign... the drivers drive you crazy - for sure.

MOTU have been always very reliable for me. I did not have any trouble with the 828 for years and I believe its only a short matter of time until MOTU or Apple release an update.

dmoffit,

I sympathize with you feelings. I think I am just about there (to throw in the towel) I hate being told by my other audio buddies... "should have gone pro tools.. snicker snicker" so I am holding out a little while longer. But as far as I can tell, is there ANY solution that will work in our situation? I mean I am all for the Apogee solution too... but that 2K extra I don't have to spend. if it is firewire in nature, then what other solution do we have (windoze?)

I'm a bit lost as to where else to go... I kinda feel like my hands are tied.

Wonder if Motu has an rss feed for their driver updates.

Got one better for you guys!

Just got off the phone with MOTU tech support. Seems they have been working on the fix and there is a beta driver in the works. They sent me a link... here it is . I am at work right now so I can't try it out, but I will tonight. If you guys would like to have at it then by all means go ahead:

Cheers!

Well I tested the driver on my machine. It appears like it still needs some more work. While my audio worked for a longer period of time, it still cut out after a couple hours and I am back to square one.. so I fired off another email to the guy who is writing the driver I guess.

Anyone who would like to try on their machine email me and I will give you the log in stuff

I started this thread, but mac won't let me log into the chaosngn anymore. Anyway, a weird thing happened. I went to install windows, and accidentally erased my OSX partition. Regardless, long story short, I've been using windows (until today) for the last 2 weeks or so. Well, guess what? The motu never ONCE cut out or stopped. So this is definitely a driver issue, not a hardware one.
